Hoax (stylized as HOAX) is an American indie pop band[1] originating in Long Island, New York[2].[3] The band is composed of Michael P. Raj (lead vocals)and Frantz N. Cesar (bass guitar). Hoax's music has been described as "empathy pop" and "the sound of beautiful sadness."[4]

The band originated with the members meeting while attending Hofstra University. They have been recognized for their diversity, representing Indian, Puerto Rican, Haitian, Ecuadorian, Irish, and Italian backgrounds in one music group.[5][6]

History[edit]

Michael P. Raj, whose parents are of Indian descent, and Frantz N. Cesar, whose parents are of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent, met while studying Business in an Accounting class at Hofstra University in 2015. The two bonded quickly over shared interests and began creating music together in Raj's basement apartment in Long Island, New York.[4]

As they continued creating music together, Cesar introduced Raj to his childhood friends, Jacob and Kevin Lopez. The group of four began working on original music derived from Raj's personal collection of songs before expanding to a more collaborative effort. Paul Brower, a classmate of Cesar from Valley Stream Christian Academy, was invited to join the band later that year to help "round out the sound and create a more sonic experience." Songwriting and arrangements are primarily handled by Raj and Cesar.[4][5]

Career[edit]

Hoax released their debut single "Beach House" with their Story of Beach House website campaign in July 2016.[7] Their second single "Indian Summer" was released in September 2016 and peaked at #41 on Spotify's UK Viral Top 50 Chart.[8][9][10][11]

On June 16, 2017, Hoax released their first EP, The Truth and Other Lies.[12] The lead single "Island" peaked at #512 on the Apple Music All Genres Chart in Lao People's Democratic Republic and was also featured on Ebro Darden's Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music.[13]

On September 29, 2017, the band released their second EP words that end with wh(y).[14] The lead single "Sway" peaked at #55 on the Apple Music Alternative Charts in Mongolia.[15]

The band supported Boy Pablo during his summer tour in 2018.[16]

On August 31, 2018, Hoax released "Moon Moon Baby"[17][18] which peaked at #150 on the iTunes Alternative Charts in France.[15] The respective music video was released on September 14, 2018.[19] The band released "Grow" on September 28, 2018, which Earmilk compared to Bee Gees and praised for having "a vintage feel while still maintaining to stay current."[6]

The band's debut album titled b? is set to be released in 2019.[20]
