Holiday Swap is a privately held company based in London that operates an online hospitality service platform accessible via its mobile phone app. Members can use the service to communicate and exchange lodgings and accommodations with other users.[1] The company does not own any of the properties listed, but as a broker charges $1 per night booking fee for the exchange of any accommodations made within the realms of the platform.

Business Model

Connections

Users list a property on the app, then search for holiday lodgings using tools such as filters and “like” accommodations that they are interested in. If the “like” is reciprocated, then the user has made a connection and can chat with them about an exchange and/or other travel topics – “Tinder for Travel”.[2]

Exchanges

If a property exchange is organised through the app, then a fee is paid to the company, but no other charges are incurred by any of the parties concerned. For added security there is an optional deposit system in place that members can use at their discretion and by mutual agreement. "One of the things we’ve been building up is the swapping functionality”.[3]

Legal Issues

Comprehensive information regarding legal issues and other guidelines and restrictions is published and regularly updated on the company website along with travel guides, advice and additional information about travel and accommodations.[4]

Safety and Security

The platform manually vets user profiles and, to help members choose safe and secure accommodations, the company has developed a rating system, where feedback relating to satisfaction is displayed on user profiles.

History

In 2013, shortly after breaking the Guinness World Record for becoming the youngest person to travel to every country in the world, James Asquith decided he wanted to make it easier and cheaper for people to travel.[5]

In 2017, Asquith founded Holiday Swap “part social media app, part booking site” with the express intention of developing a digital platform that would bring together like-minded travellers, allow them to make contacts and to swap lodgings. [6]

In 2018, silver award winner at The Best New App Awards.[7]

Helping Others

The company is actively involved in helping raise funds to aid the UNICEF UK’s Yemen Appeal and have produced a short film to document the plight of those suffering in the region.[8]
