Houssein South (born June 3rd, 1999) is a British Pop Singer-Songwriter.[1] He initially gained recognition in 2015, posting song covers onto various online video-sharing applications, garnering more than 1.5 million followers.[2] His debut single '5 Bucks' was self-released in February of 2018 and reached the Top 100 in the UK iTunes charts.
Personal Life
Houssein was born in London, England[3] to Diane Holliday and the late British-Turkish Cypriot businessman Ramadan Güney.[4] He attended Hoe Bridge School, a private academic school until the age of 13, where he obtained 12 Common Entrance Exams with straight A's and A*'s. He completed his education at home, with 11 GCSEs and 2 A Levels via online tutoring.
South was six years old when his father bought him a drum kit, and he believes that this sparked his initial interest in music, accompanied by his mother's encouragement for him to join the school choir.[5][6]
Career
South began his career at the age of 9, when he landed a role in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang UK Tour, which lead to him securing a two-year deal with The Sound Of Music UK Tour.[7][8]
Post tours, he quickly grew a massive following on various online video sharing platforms - garnering over 250 million views, and amassing a combined 100 million interactions.
His debut single, '5 Bucks' was released in February of 2018.[9] This single was subsequently followed by a further four singles throughout 2018, that accumulated over one million streams across all major digital streaming platforms. Houssein performed his single 'Tokyo' on CBBC, during Saturday Mashup! for BBC Music Day.
South was featured on BBC Music Introducing's Track of the Week, with both 'Tokyo'[10] and 'Walking Away'.
Artistry
South is a self-described pop singer[11], citing Justin Bieber, Green Day and Ed Sheeran as his main musical influences.[12]
In an interview with CelebMix, Houssein said: "my first proper obsession was Green Day – I listened to every song, watched every documentary, bought every book and went to multiple shows when they came to London. The lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong was a massive inspiration to me – even though our music style is quite different, his stage presence, writing style and just how cool he is, has always been very inspiring."[13]
In reference to Houssein's debut single '5 Bucks', The Sun noted that Houssein was "giving off an early Justin Bieber vibe, complete with his trademark hairdo."[14]
