Human Technopole (abbreviated: HT) is an Italian research institute for life sciences located in Milan, Italy. It was founded in 2016 by the Italian Government to carry on the EXPO Milan 2015 legacy.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Aiming to host up to 1,000 researchers,[6] the institute now employs around 300 people and engages in five main areas of research: Genomics, Neurogenomics, Structural Biology, Computational Biology, and Health Data Science.[11]

The Human Technopole Foundation was established by financial law n. 232, 11 December 2016.[12] The founding members of the Foundation are the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Italian Ministry of Health and the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research which are responsible for supervising the Foundation. The Italian government has committed to allocate the institute €150 million annually for 10 years.[2]

In March 2018 the Statute of the Human Technopole Foundation was approved by decree of the President of the Council of Ministers[13] and in May 2018 the first members of Human Technopole’s Supervisory Board, including the President Prof. Marco Simoni were nominated.[14]

In June 2018 the Supervisory Board nominates Prof. Iain Mattaj as first Human Technopole Director.[15][16]

In November 2019 the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte formal inaugurated the headquarters of Human Technopole in the former Expo area.[17][18][19][20]

On July 7, 2022, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers appointed Gianmario Verona, the rector of Bocconi University in Milan, as the new Chairman of the Supervisory Board.[21] On February 22, 2023, the Supervisory Board appointed Marino Zerial as the new Director.[22]

Headquarters and Campus[edit]

Human Technopole is at the heart of MIND – Milan Innovation District, located on the site that hosted EXPO Milano 2015.[23] The Human Technopole Campus is made up of five main buildings, covering a surface of roughly 30,000 square metres.[24] These are:[25][26][27]

  • Palazzo Italia: Headquarters of Human Technopole.
  • Incubator Labs: consisting of three buildings, two of which are two-story buildings primarily dedicated to laboratories, and a third single-story building that will house the support structure for the cryo-electron microscopy facility.
  • North Pavilion: this building has undergone conversion works to accommodate imaging facilities with cryo-electron microscopes (Cryo-EM) and optical microscopes (Light Microscopy Imaging).
  • South Pavilion: this building hosts experimental research laboratories and additional facilities.
  • South Building: currently under construction, with an investment of up to €94.5 million, this will be the main building of the Human Technopole campus. Once completed, it will house laboratories for 800 scientists, as well as offices, event spaces, workshops, and training courses. The winning project was selected in April 2020, and the building is expected to be operational by 2026.[28][29][30][27]

Mission and Research[edit]

The main objective of Human Technopole is the study of human biology with the aim of promoting and contributing to the improvement of human health and well-being.[31][32] In line with the institution's mission, the research work of Human Technopole aims to advance science and develop new therapeutic strategies for various groups of diseases,[33] including:

  • Cancer and cardiovascular diseases and their intermediate phenotypes;
  • Neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism and intellectual disabilities;
  • Rare and orphan diseases, such as primary ciliary dyskinesia;
  • Respiratory diseases, such as cystic fibrosis.

The research conducted by HT's researcher has been published in prestigious academic journals, including Trends in Neuroscience,[34] Science,[35] Molecular Cell,[36] Nature,[37][38] Bioinformatics,[39] and others of great significance. At Human Technopole, scientific research is structured around five Research Centres, each dedicated to a significant field of research with a specific focus on biology, genomics, ageing, analytics. These are:[11]

  • Health Data Science

Criticism[edit]

On May 4, 2016, Italian Senator Elena Cattaneo expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that the concept for the center was developed by a select group of scientists in a closed setting.[40] She argued against concentrating such a significant amount of funding into a single project, especially considering the prolonged lack of financial support for Italy's research community as a whole.[41]
