ISEM Fashion Business School (Instituto Superior de Empresa y Moda), affiliated with the University of Navarra, is the first business school specialized in fashion education that exists in Spain.[1] It is located in Madrid.

History[edit]

In 2001, Covadonga O'Shea and Rocío Ortíz de Bethencourt launched ISEM - Fashion Business School, with the aim of training professionals in negotiation and leadership skills to work in the fashion industry. ISEM was part of the Tecnomoda Foundation, a non-profit organization whose aim is to promote training in the fashion and textile industry. It soon began to offer a unique master's degree in Spain, addressed to professionals from different areas of the fashion industry, with the program of an MBA: Finance, Operations, or General Management, which are combined with specific subjects of the fashion industry, such as Collection Planning or Retail.

In 2007, Spanish Royal Decree 1393/2007 established that official university master's degrees had to be carried out by universities. In 2011, ISEM Fashion Business School became part of the University of Navarra, with whom it had maintained a close academic relationship for many years. Professor Teresa Sádaba took over the management of the center, with the objective of promoting training and research work in the world of fashion, among other things, through interdisciplinary relations with other parts of the university. In this phase, new academic programs have been launched, focusing on the management of fashion companies, on the great challenges of the sector such as digitalization and sustainability, and, in the United States, on entrepreneurship and industry trends.

In addition, ISEM's international character is reflected in alliances and agreements with recognized fashion schools and institutions, such as SDA Bocconi in Milan, Institut Français de la Mode, London College of Fashion, Center for Fashion Studies at Stockholm University and the Università della Svizzera italiana.

The ISEM's Fashion Business Administration (FBA) program is the only official Executive master's degree in Fashion Business Administration in Spain. It is approved by the Ministry of Education and is valid throughout the European Union, in accordance with the new European Higher Education Area (EHEA).

ISEM has a PhD program in Applied Creativity, promoted jointly with the School of Architecture, the School of Communication and the University of Navarra Museum, which aims to promote the study and establishment of creative processes in industries and institutions that require this competence for their activity.

Faculty[edit]

ISEM has its own faculty, professors from IESE Business School - University of Navarra, and professionals from different areas of the fashion industry, in order to achieve a unique balance between specialized knowledge and practical experience. Among the faculty, besides professors from the University of Navarra, there are specialists from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, SDA Bocconi in Milan, the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris, as well as managers and entrepreneurs from the sector.

International Rankings and Awards[edit]

  • The newspaper El Mundo ranks the FBA as the Best Specialized master's degree in Spain (2019, 2020 and 2021) and EdUniversal as the fourth best master's degree worldwide in the Fashion Management category (2021).
  • The American publication “The Education Magazine” included ISEM amongst the top ten Business Schools to study a MBA.
  • In 2016, ISEM received the National Fashion Award (Premio Nacional de Moda a la Academia y a la Cultura), which recognizes the merit and prestige of this sector of the fashion industry in Spain.[2]
