Formed on December 24, 2011 in Bandung, Indonesia. Ikkubaru's name was created by converting the frontman's name "Iqbal" into a Japanese katakana romanization. Ikkubaru was influenced by Japanese pop songs from the 1980s, dubbed "City Pop" by the Japanese. They are much influenced by Japanese musicians such as Tatsuro Yamashita, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Mariya Takeuchi, etc. Ikkubaru has also collaborated with many famous musicians in Japan, such as Tofubeats,[1][2] Especia, Faint Star, TWEEDEES,[3] Kenichiro Nishihara, Takashi Fujii,[4] etc.
The first EP from Ikkubaru, "Heart House," was released by Japanese netlabel Maltine Records in 2012.[5] And their debut album, "Amusement Park," was released by an independent label in Japan, Hope You Smile Records,[6] in 2014, making Ikkubaru well-known in Japan. The band's debut album "Amusement Park" was released in a variety of physical formats, including 12" vinyl in 2015 by Hope You Smile Records, a cassette version in 2016 by independent Indonesian label Nanaba Records,[7] and finally, in 2017, they were able to release their debut album on CD in Indonesia through Monolite Records in collaboration with Misashi Records,[8] and now for the digital release, they are under Circulate Music (USA).
Ikkubaru completed their first tour in June 2015, visiting Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Fukuoka.[9][10] That same year, they returned to Japan to attend the Asian Music Found festival in September in Fukuoka. And the second tour took place in 2016 to perform at the 2016 Shimokitazawa Sound Cruising festival[11] and also played in other cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Fukuoka, and Ooita. Skyline Tour 2017 was the fourth time the Ikkubaru Japan Tour coincided.[12]
They also collaborated with one of the most respected Japanese artists and illustrators, Hiroshi Nagai, for two covers of their 12" vinyl, "Amusement Park" and "Brighter".[13][14] In 2018, Ikkubaru spread their wings to Taipei, Taiwan, to be a part of the GIMA AWARDS 2018.[15] That was their very first time performing outside Japan and Indonesia. Ikkubaru returned to Japan after two years to perform at Asian Music Junction,[16][17] presented by TBS Radio,[18] in May 2019. They also performed at the Shimokitazawa Sound Cruising festival for the second time[19] and a Three-Man Show concert with TWEEDEES and RYUTIST in Tokyo's Daikanyama UNIT.
Their sophomore album, "Chords & Melodies"[20] was released in Indonesia in March 2020 by Terrace Batamera Records and in Japan in September 2020 by the Japanese independent record label Hayabusa Landings.[21] In September 2021, the single "Summer Love Story" c/w "無重力ファンタジア" was released in 7" vinyl format at the City Pop on Vinyl[22][23] event. Ikkubaru is currently preparing for a new single to be released around December in Japan. ikkubaru has also had the support of Zemaitis Guitar, owned by Kanda Shokai Corporation. The band's lead vocalist Iqbal uses a Zemaitis SEW22[24] electric guitar and CAF-85HCW[25] acoustic electric guitar, while the band's guitarist Rizki Firdausahlan uses a Greco Guitar BGW22 SH.[26]
