InMotion Hosting is a private, employee-owned provider of shared, WordPress, reseller, VPS and dedicated web hosting with locations in the United States including Los Angeles, California, Virginia Beach, Virginia and Denver, Colorado.
InMotion Hosting was co-founded by Todd Robinson and Sunil Saxena in July, 2001. Their id ea of a customer-centric hosting company with an open-source community arose while working at another hosting company together . Their company began with a single server and just the two founders, but has grown to a 300+ person company by 2018.
Their primary business objective has always been around delivering exceptional customer service, requiring any associate to have a minimum of 160 hours of internal training before communicating with customers via chat, skype, phone or support emails.
Initially, it was only the two founders operating a call center in downtown Los Angeles. In 2003, InMotion Hosting was considered a leader in the web hosting industry and was recognized as a Certified CNET Hosting Provider, and still is as of 2018. By the end of 2003, the company went bicoastal with an expansion to Virginia. They have had three locations in the Virginia Beach area since that time. On May 1, 2004, InMotion opened up their first office with roughly 20 employees. They were located off Independence Blvd, which is in central Virginia Beach, until 2008.
From 2008 to 2011, their office was located off Viking Drive in Virginia Beach, with a support center and 50 employees. InMotion Hosting’s big jump in company growth came in March 2011, when they opened up their location off Sentara Dr. in Virginia Beach, which is still open today. This office handles the majority of support, systems, billing and half or more of sales.
InMotion was one of the first web hosting companies to open up a second data center location in 2009, when they opened their second data center in Ashburn, Virginia. This created Max Speed Zones for users in closer proximity to either data center location, increasing the speed of their websites and emails.
In 2010, InMotion opened up the first-ever Green Hosting Data Center in Los Angeles, CA. InMotion Hosting uses 100% Dell PowerEdge servers with CentOS operating systems, which is a part of Linux distribution, that range from 16-19GB, 4 to 40 processors, and 6-35 hard drives. They keep websites up by utilizing a first rate BGP4 network with state-of-the-art, fault-tolerant IP routing.
That same year, InMotion opened sister company Web Hosting Hub (2010) to provide easy-to-setup and affordable web hosting plans to a “beginner” audience. In 2015, they launched their first web-builder company, BoldGrid.
Since inception, InMotion Hosting has grown a customer base that includes over 300,000 domains. They continue to expand, as they recently opened up another location in Virginia Beach to accommodate staff.
2011 Website Defacement
In 2011, a hacker known as TiGER-M@TE claimed to have hacked 700,000 websites and taken down an entire data center, but a statement from InMotion Hosting clarified it as a website-defacement of a couple hundred thousand sites. During the attack, files named index.php were defaced. To fix the issue, users with index.html or index.htm files had to upload those files again and remove the index.php file. Within a few hours of the hack, 65% of the websites were properly restored.
