"In The Palace" International Short Film Festival (Bulgarian: Международен фестивал на късометражно кино В ДВОРЕЦА) is one of the largest and most prestigious cinema festivals in Bulgaria, presenting films from all styles and genres of length up to 27 minutes. It has been held originally in Velingrad, in 2003, but after 2015, because of its grown popularity, the main event was held in Sofia in December, moving afterwards in Veliko Tarnovo, Varna and Balchik. The 14th edition of the festival is taking place in four different cities, starting in Sofia (December 2016), Veliko Tarnovo (April-May 2017), Varna (May-June 2017) and eventually in the fascinating Black Sea town of Balchik (June-July 2017) on the 1st of July 2017, where the final cerimony will close the Festival.
The main objective of the Festival is to present and contribute to the development of contemporary film art in Bulgaria, Europe and the world, creating a favorable environment and platform for young filmmakers and established professionals. The organisation itself relies on young volunteers from many European Countries.
Program[edit]
IN THE PALACE is organized by Format SFF Foundation and Community Centre Veshtina in partnership and with support of Sofia Municipality, Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, Bulgarian National Film Centre, National Palace of Culture and Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".
The festival has a competitive character including International, National and Student's competitions. The participating films are determined by a selection committee and evaluated by an International jury. There is an award fund allocated for the fiction, documentary, animation and experimental film categories.
Traditionally, within the Festival are held training programmes, seminars, lectures, master classes in directing, cinematography, development of film projects, digital art, post-production, PR and a qualified market for short films and projects.
History[edit]
Conceived initially as a forum for student films, the Festival is held for the first time in 2003 in Velingrad. Since its second edition, the Festival is hosted by the town of Balchik, situated on the Northern Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. Venue of the festival is the architectural park complex "The Palace", former residence of the British princess and Romanian Queen Marie of Edinburgh.
