Indranil Manna

Indranil Manna (born January 22, 1961), a former JC Bose fellow of DST (2012-22), is an Indian materials scientist, professor and academic Aadministrator. He is presently the Vice Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi.[1], Vice-President of the Indian National Science Academy, and the immediate past President (2021-24) and former Vice President (2015-20) of the Indian National Academy of Engineering [2]. His career is in physical metallurgy, surface engineering, additive manufacturing and nanotechnology.[3].

Academic career

He joined the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in November, 1985 as a Lecturer, after a brief stint with Mishra Dhatu Nigam (Ministry of Defense), Hyderabad (1984-85), and rose to the position of Full Professor [5] in 2003 and Professor (HAG) in 2009. He served as the Director of the Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) [6] from March 2010 to October 2012 and later held the position of Director at IIT Kanpur [7] from November 2012 to November 2017. During this tenure, he concurrently served as the National Coordinator of IMPacting Research INnovation and Technology” (IMPRINT) [8], a national level technology development initiative of the MHRD, Government of India.

Research and contributions

His research interests principally center on the microstructure-property-parameter correlation of engineering materials.He has contributed to the study of amorphous/nanocrystalline Al-alloys, nano/ferro-fluid, laser/plasma assisted surface engineering, bainitic steel, and additive manufacturing,[9]

  • Mouat Medal – Awarded by the University of Calcutta (1999)
  • He was honoured as a distinguished alumnus by IIEST Shibpur (2017) and IIT Kharagpur (2017).
  • He is a recipient of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Prize in Engineering Sciences (2013)< and was elected a Fellow of TWAS (2015).
  • Binani Gold Medal (1999)
  • MRSI Medal in 2000
  • G D Birla Gold Medal (2008) of IIM
  • Honorary Fellowship of IIM (2017)
  • Was conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degrees from the University of Kalyani and Kazi Nazrul University (2017).
  • He was felicitated by the Ministry of Steel with the Young Metallurgist (1991), Metallurgist of the Year (2002) and the National Metallurgist Award (2018).
