The Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) is a main trade organisation in the UK for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), that represents UK small businesses from the economic standpoint, and not as a political voice.
History[edit]
The organisation began informally by holding annual international conferences from 1977, often at universities. [1] In the 1970s the UK had one of the lowest rates of foundations of new small businesses and SME ownership in western world.
It was formed in 1989 as the Institute for Small Business Affairs which it was called from 21 September 1992 until 17 November 2004. It was a charity from June 1999.[2][3]
With the Small Business Research Trust and the DTi, it produced a database in 1998 on topics such as tax and regulation.[4]
It has held seminars with ACCA.[5]
Structure[edit]
It is headquartered in Barnsley in South Yorkshire.
Function[edit]
It produces the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research and holds annual conferences.
