Intelligent Island

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Intelligent Island is a term used to describe Singapore in the 1990s, in reference to the island nation's early adaptive relationship with the internet.[1] The term is referenced in William Gibson's 1993 essay Disneyland with the Death Penalty.[2]

History[edit]

Singapore's mass communications networks, including television and phone networks, have long been operated by the government. When Singapore first came online, Singaporeans could use Teleview to communicate with each other, but no one outside of their sovereign city-state. Publications such as The Wall Street Journal were censored.[1]
