International Design Day (IDD), formerly known as World Design Day or World Graphic Design Day, is an international day commemorating the essential functions of the graphic designer in society and commerce, highlighting the importance of this profession,[1] as well as its contribution to generating significant change around the world and making it a tool of social value.[2] It also stems from a concept developed by Kim Paulsen (Vice-President 1993–1995) to commemorate the founding of the International Council of Design.[3] Similarly, its purpose is to encourage designers to reflect deeply on the well-being of people within their local environments and to find innovative solutions to local needs using design as a vehicle to honour the diversity and transcending borders.[3] It is held every 27 April on the initiative of the International Council of Design, an association founded on 27 April 1963 in the city of London, England and currently headquartered in Montreal, Canada.[4]
In 1991, as an initiative of this Council, its founding day was taken as the World Graphic Designer Day. The day initially known as "World Graphics Day" became the "World Communication Design Day" in 2012, "World Design Day" in 2015 and "International Design Day" in 2020.[5]
ICoD promotes the union of the voices of graphic designers and visual communication designers around the world. He holds the rank of adviser to the European Council, Unesco, United Nations and Wipo.[5][1][3]
International Design Day 2021[edit]
International Design Day 2021: design for each and all The theme of International Design Day 2021 is 'Design for Each and All'. The collective human family is made up of many different types of people who intersect. The way in which "each and every one" of human beings meets the designed world depends on varying degrees of equitable access to certain realities, spaces, and material experiences.
Starting in 2021, the event formerly known as World Design Day is now celebrated as International Design Day (IDD) and is an opportunity to recognize the value of design and its capacity for change in the world, and to celebrate the birthday of ICoD!
