Ireti Heebah Kingibe is a Nigerian civil engineer, philanthropist and politician. She was the wife of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Baba Gana Kingibe and the younger sister to Nigeria’s former First Lady Ajoke Mohammed.[1][2]
Education and career
Kingibe was born on June 2, 1954 to a father whos is Muslim and a mother who is Christian.[3] She started school at Emotan Preparatory School in Benin City.[4] Subsequently she attended Queen's College, Lagos before moving to the United States to join Washington Irving High School for the period between 1970 and 1973.[4] She speaks multiple languages including English, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.[3] She has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1980).[5][2] She then worked in the private sector in Minnesota, for Bradley Precast Concrete Inc., and for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.[2][when?] From 1981 until 1982 she worked at the headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force base in Ikeja, Lagos where she oversaw a water project.[2] From 1982 until 1985 she worked for a construction company in Kaduna.[4]
In 2014 Kingibe was named chair of the Leadership Newspapers Group,[4] a position she would resign later that year to follow her political aspirations.[6]
Political career
Kingibe has run for the position of senator multiple times. In 2003 she was the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party for the Federal Capital Territory but she however lost the election.[citation needed] In 2006 and 2011 she ran as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, but did not go beyond the primaries.[7] During the 2014 senatorial race Kingibe withdrew from the primary race and, at the same time, withdrew from the Peoples Democratic Party because of issues with the primary elections.[8][9] In 2015, she ran within the All Progressives Congress, while she did not go beyond the primaries stage[7] she campaigned for President Muhammadu Buhari.[9] In 2018 she ran again for the senatorial seat.[9][10]
She joined the Labour Party in 2022 and emerged as the Federal Capital Territory senatorial candidate for the 2023 Nigerian general elections.[11][12]
Personal life
She was married to Baba Gana Kingibe, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation,[13] though as of 2018 they were not married.[9] She has three children; two boys and a girl.[13] Kingibe's older sister is the former first lady Ajoke Mohammed.[14] In 2019 Adebowale Odutola, the daughter of Olubuse II and thereby princess of Nigeria, named a line of handbags after Kingibe.[15]
