Isobel Harrop (born 28 April 1995) is a British author and illustrator, and creator of the young adult book The Isobel Journal.[1]

Early life[edit]

Born in Warrington in 1995, she attended Penketh High School until July 2013, and now attends the University of Sussex, studying English and Philosophy.[2] She spent her early childhood creating homemade books based on Jacqueline Wilson novels, placing them on the shelves of her school library in the hope they would be read by other students.[3]

Career[edit]

In 2012, aged 16, Harrop's Twitter account was spotted by publisher Emily Thomas of Hot Key Books.[4][5] Initially approaching Harrop with the idea of creating a book based on her tweets, after seeing illustrations she had drawn on the side of school work and uploaded to her blog, Hot Key decided to create a journal of Harrop's sketches, despite the fact they were never intended to be seen by the public.[6][7]

The resulting book, The Isobel Journal: Just a Northern Girl from Where Nothing Really Happens,[8] was released on November 7, 2013.[9] Reception to the book has been positive, with a current score of 4.3 out of 5 on Goodreads.[10] Her work has been praised by Laura Dockrill.[11]

Other Works[edit]

Harrop also writes and publishes a zine called 2nd Hand Zine, concerning the culture surrounding charity shops, car boot sales and thrift stores.[12][13]

Political Views[edit]

Harrop identifies as a vegetarian and a feminist.[14]
