Nohelys Jiménez (born October 17, 2005, in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic) artistically known as J Noa, is a rapper and rap composer. Her music is highlighted by the lines between the voices and rhymes in various Dominican genres such as bachata, typical merengue and dembow. Her rap style is particularly married to the socioeconomic reality of her country.[1]

Musical career

Born as Nohelys Jimenez in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, the young composer's humble upbringing was immersed in culture, and mainly music. The neighborhood that raised her fueled her interest in rap, making her way into the cypher scene from an early age.[2]

She has composed her first verse at the age of 8 and her first song at 11, after seeing an interview by the Dominican artist El Super Nuevo, who would encourage her to pursue the rap genre professionally, beginning in 2018 uploading videos of freestyle to social media platforms. [1]

On January 26, 2020, she met the music producer Fugi Music, with whom she began her preparations for her first music record. In December of that same year, the Francis Beat platform called her to do a freestyle, achieving notoriety on social media platforms.[1]

In March 2021, she arrived for the first time at Dj Scuff's "Frente a Frente" music program, where she also had an important impact in her native country, later participating as a guest in other programs of musical interest in her native country and region as "El Show del Mediodia", "El Gobierno Urbano" and "This Is Not Radio".

In 2022, she signed with Sony Music Entertainment, and was chosen by the platform Noise Colectivo, to star in the first edition of a documentary series entitled 'Mi Barrio'', which aims to show the new generation of prominent musicians in the latin urban movement [2] [3]. That same year she released her first single 'Que Fue, which focuses on criticizing the government of her country, regarding social and economic issues.

Noa has garnered more than 500k views on her music videos on YouTube alone and more than 320k followers across social media platforms.[4]

Musical Style

One of her main musical inspirations is the Dominican rapper and songwriter Melymel, who has always shown support for Noa's musical career.

Known as "la hija del rap" — which translates to “daughter of rap” —, Noa began to build a significant audience, through her on-camera rap verses and lyrical battles, where she would traditionally establish herself as one of the youngest women rapper from her town that sings about gender equality. [3]

As an artist, her skills transcend one genre of rap, including other Dominican genres such as bachata, typical merengue, and dembow. Her style is particularly intertwined with the socioeconomic reality of her country, which has led her to become a voice in defense of freedom of speech, educational equality, as well as against corruption.
