Jack Delbert Simons (born December 5, 1977) is an Assistant Professor of School Counseling at Mercy College. He lives in New York and Arizona. His work is both quantitative and qualitative, with attention to Social Psychology and Feminism in School Counseling. This work often begins with school or community interviews. Simons has published in academic journals and has been interviewed on a range of subjects, including the experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people;[1] and the linguistic intelligence of teachers who teach ESL students.[2] Academically, he is most known for his paper on Counseling in the Czech Republic, which was written with Brian Hutchison and Zuzana Baštecká.[3] It addresses the relationship between the fields of psychology and counseling and highlights concerns related to the assessment of Romani people. Simons received the 2015 Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Research Award for this work. A subsequent writing in Counseling Around the World expands on it.[4]

Career and education[edit]

Jack Simons received M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees in Counseling from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. His thesis was on school counselor advocacy for sexual minority students. He worked with Susan Kashubeck-West, Mark Pope, and Michael Bahr. While there, he was a fellow on two grants, the Quality Teachers for English Learners (QTEL) grant with Kim Song and the MasterCard Math Manipulatives grant with Helene Sherman. Simons was a research scientist on the Generations Study while teaching at The University of Arizona. The Generations Study is the first long-term study to examine the health and will-being of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people over three generations. Jack has written about his own coming out in Counseling Today.

Research and teaching[edit]

Simons’ scholarship focuses on advocacy, school counselor competence, and fair education. In this way, his work is interdisciplinary, collaborative, and dynamic. Research participants and students learn to become effective social change agents.
