Travis Cloyd is an American entrepreneur, producer, professor and futurist who was listed on Forbes 1000 Next Entrepreneurs in 2021.[1] He was the recipient of the FIU Medallion for University Service in 2021 awarded by the Florida International University.[2] Cloyd's virtual reality films and experiences have won multiple awards.[3][1]

Early life[edit]

Cloyd was born in Mission Hills, California and grew up in Santa Clarita, California. Cloyd received All-Colorado football player honors from The Denver Post and went to Arizona State University to pursue his education and athletic career.[4][5] Cloyd began his career in entrepreneurship and in 2006 co-founded WorkBlast.com. The first national video resume SaaS platform.[6][7]

Education[edit]

Cloyd is the Global Futurist at the Thunderbird School of Global Management of Arizona State University.[8][9][10] Cloyd, was the Futurist in Residence and Adjunct Professor at Florida International University where he taught Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality in 2018-2020.[11] Cloyd also co-founded Immersive Studio for Altered Reality (iSTAR) at FIU along with his partner Lee Caplin.[12][13] Cloyd teaches the metaverse and has educated on the next real estate boom and the virtual economy that will happen within the Metaverse. [14][15][16][17]

Augmented Reality[edit]

In 2013, Cloyd co-developed an augmented reality experience based on computer-animated musical fantasy film called Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return starring voices of Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi,and Martin Short. The film was inspired by the 1989 book Dorothy of Oz by L. Frank Baum's great-grandson Roger Stanton Baum. It was directed by Daniel St. Pierre and Will Finn. The film's Augmented Reality experience was the first of it's kind and brought the Toto character to life in 3D on the Toto Oz Party App. Connecting technology and human interaction using camera gesture control and gyro sensing. He co-developing an innovative motion tracking and interactive iOS application which was the first dance app to use motion tracking camera technology to allow players to make the animated character move using their own body movements. The app also utilized GPS for real-time weather simulation. The app launched on iOS, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.[18]

In 2021, Cloyd directed and produced an Augmented Reality campaign with Space Force and the Neil Armstrong estate with the purpose of inspiring and educating current and future generations about the importance of developing and advancing space capabilities required to protect the U.S. and its allies from space-related threats. This campaign was produced with the Space Force GPS III on a satellite named after Neil Armstrong displaying real-time Augmented Reality 3D satellite holograms and GPS constellation digital collectibles launched on Ethereum and Solana blockchains, and both iOS and Android.[19] [20]

Virtual Reality[edit]

Cloyd’s first Indian Virtual Reality production was a collaboration with Reliance Jio in Mumbai, India filming A. R. Rahman, Shah Rukh Khan and Mukesh Ambani.[21] In USA he produced a 360 degree video for Daytona 500 with NASCAR Productions and Fox Sports in 2016 for the YouTube 360 launch.[22]

Cloyd’s first virtual reality experience was The Recall 2017 film with Wesley Snipes.[23][24] The Recall Virtual reality experience was shot in first person perspective and released on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.[25] Cloyd Executive Produced the feature film in a 3-screen Barco Escape format. The VR experience was the first to use a container application available on IOS and Android for publishing on Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift.[23][26][27]

In 2018 he made his second virtual reality filmThe Humanity Bureau with Nicolas Cage.[28] [29] The virtual reality format written and produced by Cloyd and won the Best Sci-Fi VR Film at Cinequest. Cloyd was also Production Executive on the full length feature and Barco escape 3-screen format.[30][31][32][33]

Cloyd’s third virtual reality film Distorted Reality was based on the the 2018 film Distorted with John Cusack and Christina Ricci. It was shot on the GoPro Odyssey camera with spatial ambisonics audio. The Odyssey is a 16-camera panoramic stereo rig designed to produce content for the Google Jump virtual reality platform by synchronizing the cameras and automatically stitching their footage together. Distorted Reality is a 10-minute film that was distributed Google Daydream, Oculus Go, Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, iOS and in stereo 3D on various platforms like the Littlstar app on Sony’s’ Playstation VR.[34][35][36]

Cloyd also produced and directed Speed Kills 2018 VR with John Travolta, Katheryn Winnick, Kellan Lutz, Mathew Modine, Jennifer Esposito, James Remar and Jordi Molla.[37] It was released on iOS, Android, Oculus Rift, Samsung GearVR, Oculus Go, Oculus Rift and STEAM and also premiered at Cannes in France.

Speed Kills VR won Best VR Feature Film at Cinequest where Cloyd also won the 2018 Visionary Award for his work on bringing celebrity talent into this new story-telling medium.[38][39][40] The film was a finalist for top VR Film of the Year at 2018 VR Awards and lost to Carne Y Arena by ILMxLAB directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.[41][42][43]

in 2019 Cloyd collaborated with renowned sports agent Leigh Steinberg[44][45] and created and produced the Patrick Mahomes MVP VR Experience 2019 which was released on Oculus Quest.[46][47][48]

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT)[edit]

In 2021 his digital rights agency Worldwide XR started producing NFTs based on historical celebrities figures. They created the the Neil Armstrong NFT campaign that was released on the blockchain[49] and the U.S Space Force licensed NFTs that were issues on Solana blockchain.[50]

in 2021 Cloyd created NFT's for the James Dean estate. Cloyd partnered with CMG Worldwide, an agency that represents the estates of actors and other public figures for licensing deals which had previously licensed James Dean's likeness to McDonald's, Mont Blanc, Tommy Hilfiger, Chrysler, and even to Porsche. Together they created James Dean's 550 Spyder NFT as well as 3D digital bust of James Dean, a digital one-room museum full of James Dean memorabilia, and the Spyder.[51][52]
