Jal Shakti Abhiyan or JSA is an initiative of the Government of India that aims to create awareness for water conservation and water security among the masses. The programme was launched by Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on 1 July 2019 in New Delhi. The campaign is launched along the lines of Swachh Bharat mission to make water conservation a Jan Andolan. At present only 8% of the total rainwater is harvested in India.

- The programme will run in two phases with the participation of various stakeholders -
- Phase 1- 1 July 2019 – 15 September 2019- during monsoon season
- Phase 2 (additional)- 1 October 2019- 30 November- for states receiving North East retreating monsoons[1]
- The focus will be to ensure effective implementation of five conservation efforts in 1592 water stressed blocks (falling in critical or overexploited groundwater category) identified in 256 districts of India. The conservation efforts are- Water conservation and Rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies like tanks, ponds, etc., renovation of borewell recharge structures, watershed development, and exhaustive afforestation.[1]
- There will be teams led by Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary rank officers to cover these districts with a focus on implementation and convergence of water conservation schemes already covered under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme and the Integrated Watershed Management programme, and Micro Irrigation programme.[2]
- For making JSA, a mass campaign, large scale communication campaign has been planned for attracting different groups like school students, college students, Self Help Groups, etc.
- There will not be any additional allocation of funds or targets for this campaign.[2]
Other similar initiatives by the government
- Jal Kranti Abhiyan- The initiative was launched on 5 June 2015 by Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation for creating awareness for water security and conservation through grass root level participation of various stakeholders including Panchayati Raj institutions, local bodies in water security, NGOs, citizens, etc. Activities undertaken under this initiative are- Jal Gram Yojana, Development of Model Command Area, Pollution abatement, etc.[3][4][5]
- Humara Jal Humara Jeevan Programme- The initiative was launched to be observed in every district during India Water Week. It aims to engage academia, scientists, NGOs, water communities, and various other groups to give inputs in water resource management at the local level and to create awareness among the masses.[5][6]
- Bhoomijal Samvardhan Puraskar (Groundwater Augmentation Awards)- It is given to NGOs and local governments for their innovative methods to make use of groundwater sustainable.[7]
