James Asquith is a British banker, travel writer and app designer who is the Guinness World Record holder for being the youngest person to visit every country in the world.[1]
Life and travels
Asquith grew up in Stevenage.[2] He started his travels on 4 July 2008,[3] at the age of 18, when he went to Southeast Asia for volunteer work in Vietnam.[4] Once he returned, he embarked on an intense traveling schedule combined with studying at the London School of Economics. Asquith financed his trips with part-time jobs and investing in the stock market. He made several trips with his father, a pilot. While traveling, he sometimes worked in bars and hostels to get free food and lodging. He visited all 196 countries by the age of 24, covering most countries within five years.[5] He arrived in the last country, Micronesia, on 8 July 2013.[1] The entire trip cost $209,000.[6]
After graduating, Asquith became a banker.[7] He published a book on his travels, Breaking Borders, in 2016.[5] A year later, he launched Holiday Swap, an app that lets people swap homes with each other when traveling.[8] As of mid-2018, the Holiday Swap app was in 102 countries and was used by airline and tourist boards.[9]
Awards
In July 2018, Asquith was the Silver Winner in the Best New Mobile App Awards. [9]
