James Heather is a pianist and composer based in London, he released his debut album Stories From Far Away On Piano on Ninja Tune founders Coldcut’s other label Ahead Of Our Time on 18th August 2017.[1]
Biography[edit]
As a child in Southampton, Heather's grandfather taught him composition and how to manipulate the tuning of piano strings, whilst his grandmother on the other side used to dabble in improvisations. How own compositions came from the age of 11 inspired by a love of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Claude Debussy and his older neighbours Acid House pirate radio station which he listened to from the garden.[2]
In 2008 Heather nearly died in a traumatic road traffic accident, leaving him in a coma in intensive care. One permanent injury was his finger, which became skewed in the crash. He was initially unsure if he’d ever be able to play to the same standard again. “When I eventually started to recover I began taking my musical sketches more seriously. I found solitude channeling my feelings into compositions.”[3]
Heather spent many years honing composition before recording and releasing his own music, taking influence from electronic music's structure, ambience and melody and combining it with a grounding in classical and jazz.[4]
He now releases music on Coldcut’s Ahead Of Our Time label. First came Modulations: EP 1, 7 tracks written in various head spaces[5]. Next came his debut album Stories From Far Away On Piano, a more unified conceptual piece of work. The album concept centred on Heathers interpretations of real world news stories. [6]. The album received positive reviews from The Arts Desk, Loud and Quiet, Mixmag, Uncut, Exclaim, Mojo & many more [7]
Heather has collaborated with Dawn Richard, Mumdance and Roger Robinson (King Midas Sound) [8] he has played on bills with the likes of Laura Marling, Jóhann Jóhannsson and Lubomyr Melnyk [9], performed live with Iskra Strings [10] and played festivals such as Glastonbury, Wilderness and Seachange. [11]
