James Tan is a Singaporean entrepreneur and venture capital investor.[2] He is the co-founder of NASDAQ-listed WoWo and co-founder and Managing Partner of Singapore venture capital firm Quest Ventures.[3][4][5] He is widely known for his early-stage startup investments at Carousell, Carro, ShopBack, and 99.co.[6][7]
Early life and education[edit]
Tan was born and raised in Singapore. After dropping out as a Computer Science major from National University of Singapore, Tan went on to graduate from the University of South Australia, before earning his MBA from Tsinghua University.[8][9]
Career[edit]
During his career, Tan has founded WoWo and Quest Ventures, and invested in many successful companies including Carousell, ShopBack, Carro, and 99.co.[10]
WoWo[edit]
Tan cofounded WoWo, one of China’s largest group buying sites, with more than 34 million subscribers across 150 Chinese cities in 2015.[11] Tan took 55Tuan public on 25 February 2015.[citation needed] It was the first Chinese eCommerce firm to be listed on the NASDAQ.[12]
Quest Ventures[edit]
In 2011, Tan founded Singapore-based venture capital firm, Quest Ventures, which has gone on to back unicorns in the region, including Shopback, Carro, and Carousell.[13][14] Early investments by Quest Ventures were made out of Tan’s personal capital.[15] He is dubbed the investor with the Midas touch.[16] As of 2022, Quest Ventures has invested in more than 90 companies across Asia.[17] Tan has been an advocate of impact investing, and is a proponent for the usage of venture capital to resolve climate change and alleviate poverty in developing nations.[18]
Action Community for Entrepreneurship[edit]
In 2020, Tan was elected as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Action Community for Entrepreneurship, a national private sector-led organization established in 2003 by the Ministry of Trade & Industry.[19][20]
Personal life[edit]
Tan is married with one daughter.[8]
