Jason Derlatka (born January 30, 1972) is an American composer, singer, and keyboardist. He is known for composing music for television series such as House M.D. and The Agency – for which he earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations[2] – and for performing as a keyboardist and vocalist with the rock band Journey since 2020.[3]
Early life and education
Derlatka grew up in Montana and began playing piano at the age of four.[4] By age 11, he was studying music at the University of Montana, where he would later earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. While in college, he met record producer David Foster, who invited him to orchestrate and perform with him – an experience that inspired Derlatka to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.[5]
Career
Composition and scoring
In the early 2000s, Derlatka began composing for film and television. Along with collaborator Jon Ehrlich, he co-scored the CBS drama The Agency and the Fox medical series House M.D., receiving Primetime Emmy Award nominations for both (in 2003 and 2008, respectively).[2][6] He has since written music for numerous television series, often partnering with Ehrlich, including Invasion, Tru Calling, Parenthood, About a Boy, The Slap, Pitch, Goliath, The Resident, and Perfect Harmony.[7]
Journey
In 2020, Neal Schon announced Jason Derlatka as a new addition to Journey's lineup as keyboardist and backing vocalist.[8] Derlatka officially joined that year, performing high harmony vocals alongside longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain. His debut appearance was during a virtual UNICEF benefit concert in May 2020.
Since then, he has toured with Journey on the Freedom Tour (2022–2023), participated in recording the band’s 2022 studio album Freedom, and received praise for vocal performances similar to Steve Perry’s.[3]
Solo projects
In December 2023, Derlatka independently released a holiday-themed album titled December, featuring Christmas classics and originals.[9] On October 5, 2024, he released a single titled "Something Higher", accompanied by a music video.[10] He regularly shares piano-vocal covers on his YouTube channel.
