Jeny Dolly A (born 15 July 1985) is an Indian filmmaker, writer, and translator. She has worked as an assistant director and creative contributor in several notable Tamil films including Kabali, Kaala , Sarpatta Parambarai, and the upcoming Hindi film Birsa Munda. As a director, her short film Share Auto was featured by Film Companion as one of the top five must-watch films on caste. She has also subtitled several acclaimed Tamil films and is a published Tamil translator.
Early life and education
Jeny Dolly was born in Bodinayakkanur, Tamil Nadu, as the third of four children. She spent her formative years in Dharmapuri and pursued her higher education in Madurai and Chennai. She earned a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Lady Doak College, Madurai, and a Master's degree in Social Work from the Madras School of Social Work. Although trained academically in Human Resources, she chose to build a career in Cinema, Literature, and Social work.
Career
2007–2011: Early work
Between 2007 and 2009, Jeny Dolly worked with communities affected by industrial pollution. From 2010 to 2011, she served as an Environmental Science lecturer at Patrician College of Arts and Science, Chennai.
Her entry into the visual medium began through mentorship under Bala Kailasam, where she worked on the political documentary series Rauthiram Pazhagu, aired on Puthiya Thalaimurai. She was one of the producers of the show between 2011 and 2013, during which she met director Pa. Ranjith.
2014–present: Filmmaking
After an interview with Pa. Ranjith in 2014, Dolly joined his direction team. She began as an Assistant Director for Kabali (2016), then worked as an Associate Director on Kaala (2018). For Sarpatta Parambarai (2021), she was the Co-Director (First AD). She also contributed to research and writing for Ranjith’s upcoming Hindi biopic Birsa Munda.
Her directorial debut, the short film Share Auto (2018), was produced by Pa. Ranjith and was praised for its powerful caste-based narrative. Film Companion listed it among the top five caste-based short films to watch.

Dolly has subtitled several critically acclaimed Tamil films into English, including:

Theatre
Jeny Dolly also has a background in Tamil theatre. She performed in five plays over a span of five years, gaining significant stage experience that influenced her cinematic storytelling style.
Translation
She is an accomplished translator from English to Tamil. In 2016, she translated a collection of classical short stories. She also translated the memoir My Father Baliah by Y.B. Satyanarayana into Tamil, titled En Thanthai Balaiah. Notably, a copy of this book appears in the introductory scene of Kabali, held by actor Rajinikanth, symbolizing the film’s Dalit narrative.

Jeny resides in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She is married to Anthony BJ Ruban, a professional sound designer. She remains active in the creative arts and continues to contribute to Cinema, Literature, and Social Causes.
