Chung In-yung (Korean: 정인영; May 6, 1920 – July 21, 2006) was a prominent South Korean businessman and the founder of the **Halla Group** (now HL Group). He was the younger brother of Chung Ju-yung, the founder of the Hyundai Group, and played a pivotal role in the development of South Korea's heavy and automotive industries.
Early life and education
Chung was born in Tongchon County, Kangwon Province. He attended Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan before returning to Korea to join his brother in establishing the Hyundai Group.
In 1991, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Chonnam National University in recognition of his contributions to the national economy and regional industrial development through the establishment of large-scale manufacturing facilities.
Career
Chung served as the president of Hyundai Construction before founding his own business, the Halla Group, in 1962. Under his leadership, Halla became a major chaebol, with key subsidiaries including: Mando Corporation: A leading global automotive parts supplier. Halla Engineering & Construction: A major infrastructure developer. Halla Climate Control: Now part of Hanon Systems.
Known as the "Phoenix of the Business World" (재계의 불사조), Chung was celebrated for his resilience in rebuilding the Halla Group after the 1997 Asian financial crisis.
