The Jessica Chambers burning death is an incident that happened in Mississippi on December 6, 2014, when 19-year-old Jessica Lane Chambers was found badly burned along a road. Chambers' vehicle was on fire, and she suffered burns over 98 percent of her body.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Chambers died hours later in a Memphis, Tennessee hospital.[1]
It was later revealed that Chambers had visited a gas station hours before the incident.[8]
A 27-year-old Mississippi man, Quinton Verdell Tellis, already a suspect in a different murder case,[9] was charged in the December 2014 burning death of Chambers.[1][10] District Attorney John Champion announced in February 2016 that Tellis had been charged with capital murder in the death of Chambers.[1]
Champion told reporters that Tellis and Chambers were friends and knew each other, but would not describe a motive.[1] Champion said he believed it was a "personal crime" and not related to gang or drug activity. Champion also said he would not reveal to reporters what Chambers had said to firefighters who arrived at the scene.[1]
Tellis entered a not guilty plea to the charges.[11]
Chambers had been a softball player and cheerleader at South Panola High School.[1]
