On June 18, 2023, a mass shooting in unincorporated Downers Grove Township, DuPage County south of Willowbrook, Illinois, United States, resulted in 23 shooting victims of which one was killed at a Juneteenth celebration.[1][2]

Background[edit]

Approximately 200 teens and young adults were gathered in a parking lot off Route 83 and Honeysuckle Rose Lane in unincorporated DuPage County to celebrate Juneteenth which had become an annual tradition amongst residents of the nearby Hinsdale Lake Terrace apartments.[3] The incident occurred approximately one mile south of Willowbrook, to the immediate west of Burr Ridge, and approximately one mile north of Lemont.

Shooting[edit]

At approximately 12:30 a.m., at least 20 shots were fired into a crowd of over 200 teens and young adults who had gathered for a party in a parking lot off Route 83 in DuPage County.[4] Reginald Meadows, age 31, was killed from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.[5]

Aftermath[edit]

In the wake of the shooting, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tweeted that "The President and First Lady are thinking of those killed and injured in the shooting in Illinois last night", and that the Biden administration had offered assistance to state and local officials.[6] Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker issued a statement regarding the incident: "As I've said time and time again, gun violence is a public health emergency in this country and I remain committed to banning these dangerous weapons and making our state safer for everyone."[7]
