Jiří Tondl (Czech pronunciation: [ˈjɪr̝̊i ˈtondl̩]) is a Czech photographer and photojournalist. In 1998, he was accepted into the Association of Professional Photographers of the Czech Republic [cz], where he has been a member of its supervisory board since 2017.[1]

Biography[edit]

Tondl was born in Zruč nad Sázavou, Czechoslovakia in 1950. His first photographs were taken around the Posázaví [cz] region near his home. Self-taught in photography, he studied using then-sporadically published professional journals.

Eventually, Tondl moved to Brno where he studied under the well-known pedagogue Karel Otto Hrubý [cz]. During this time he also became acquainted with Bohumír Prokůpek [cz] of the Český dřevák. Eventually, he received permission to study abroad and attended Leningrad State University's Department of Journalism. As part of his studies, he created an extensive photographic record of life in the city during the 1970s, a record he subsequently used in his diploma thesis.

After making his return to Czechoslovakia, Tondl was conscripted into the Czechoslovak Army where he catalogued daily military life.

During the 1980s Tondl was attached to the Czechoslovak embassy in China, where he took a number of photographs of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
