JioHotstar, formaly known as Disney+ Hotstar, is an Indian subscription video-on-demand over-the-top streaming service owned by JioStar, after the merger of Viacom18 and Disney Star .[1][2][3] On 14 February 2025, Disney+ Hotstar in India merged its service with JioCinema to form JioHotstar.
Outside of India, in Singapore, Canada, and the United Kingdom, Hotstar operates as a streaming service targeting Indian diaspora, focusing on JioStar's domestic entertainment and sports content. Hotstar formerly operated in the United States as well, it was closed in 2021 and its content was folded into Hulu and ESPN+.
History
As Hotstar
Hotstar was launched by Star India on February 11, 2015. Star India, a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox, strategically timed the launch to coincide with major sporting events, which helped rapidly increase its viewership. In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox, including its assets such as Star India and, consequently, Hotstar. This acquisition was part of a larger strategy for Disney to expand its direct-to-consumer streaming services.
As Disney+Hotstar
In April 2020, Disney rebranded Hotstar as Disney+ Hotstar. This rebranding effort integrated the platform into Disney's global streaming framework, adding Disney+ original content along with the vast library of Disney’s main brands such as Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic.
The service also expanded beyond India to countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, offering a combination of local and Disney content. On February 14, 2025, Disney+ Hotstar's Indian business merged with JioCinema, creating a new joint venture called JioHotstar, co-owned by Viacom18 and Disney India. The merger doesn't affect outside of India where it was launched as Disney Plus Hotstar.
Re-Launch as Jio Hotstar
On 14 February 2025, JioHotstar was launched after merging Disney+ Hotstar and JioCinema. Disney+ Hotstar rebranded their app as Jio Hotstar, and the content has been added from JioCinema. Since JioCinema is used less commonly, the contents from Disney+ Hotstar are not available on there. On most devices clicking or starting a show on JioCinema redirects to the JioHotstar app or site. [4][5]
Description
The merger is anticipated to leverage the strength of both platforms, combining sports contents where JioCinema hosted several major leagues such as 2024 Summer Olympics, Paralympic Games, Indian Super League, Men's T20 World Cup, BCCI matches, AFC Asian Cup, etc. and Disney+ Hotstar hosts Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Indian Premier League and also video library where JioCinema already has combined with Peacock and Hotstar hosts nearly all Disney contents.[6][7]
