Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy
The Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy is an endowed chair at University College London. It was endowed (shortly after the Jodrell Chair of Physiology) by T J Phillips Jodrell in 1874.
UCL was the first university in England to have a Chair of Zoology, and the first holder was Robert Edmond Grant after which the post received the Jodrell endowment.[1]
Jodrell was a 'wealthy eccentric' alumnus of University College. Jodrell went insane before his gift could be completed, so the gift required the 'Masters in Lunacy' to confirm the gift.[1]
Until 1948, the professor of Zoology was also Curator of the Grant Museum of Zoology, after this point the two roles were separated. [2]
