Introduction[edit]

Joe Blalock (born Joseph Charles Blalock Jr. – 1969, Spartanburg, South Carolina) is an American landscape architect, artist, and academic. At Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, Joe Blalock serves as the Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture, where he also teaches as an associate professor. He is a registered landscape architect in the state of Indiana and formerly in South Carolina and Connecticut. Blalock received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from SUNY-ESF in 1992, and went on to achieve a Master of Urban Design from the Pratt Institute in 1995.[1] In academia and practice, he focuses on urban design and placemaking, drawing, digital technology / communications, advanced computer modeling, animation / video and interactive environments, and contemporary practice.[2] As department chair and member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, his efforts are primarily focused on advocating for the profession.

Practice[edit]

Outside of academia, Blalock practices as a professional landscape architect and urban designer in Muncie, Indiana for Blalock Design Studio. He has previous experience working as a landscape architect for William Renninger Associates in Greenville, South Carolina and LADA in Simsbury, CT.[3] Projects have included commercial, residential, institutional master planning, multi-family housing, community workshops, site design, and competition design. He is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
