Joel Amadi, known as Joe El, (born 23 March) is a Nigerian afrobeats singer, songwriter and performer,[1][2] signed with Kennis Music. In 2006, he participated in the Star Quest singing competition in Jos and later on in the annual Kennis Music Easter fiesta.[2]
Family and education
Joel Amadi was born to the Amadi Didam family in Sokoto, Sokoto State, and grew up in Kano State.[2] His father came from Zikpak, Kafanchan, southern Kaduna State,[3] and his mother from Otukpa, Benue State. Joel attended Ramat Nursery and Primary School and afterwards Army Day Secondary School, Bukavu Barracks, Kano State. After graduating, he studied at the Kaduna State College of Education, Kafanchan (affiliated to the University of Jos), from where he graduated in 2005 with a diploma in Accounting and Auditing.[2]
Several newsmedia reported the songwriter posting on 24 July 2020 about the murder of his father by Fulani herdsmen in his hometown, expressing his sadness and disappointment on the governor's handling of security in the state.[3][4][5][6] He explained to Opera News a week later that the state governor withdrew the troops a day before the incidence.[7] Speaking with The Guardian, he reportedly called on the federal and state government to speak up against the killings bedevilling the southern part of his state.[8]
Musical career
Joe El began his musical career in 2006, when he participated in the Star Quest singing competition which was his first TV appearance.
In 2009, he left Kano to Lagos where he hoped to achieve his dream of being among the world's greatest musicians. It took a struggle before he finally met Kenny Ogungbe, the CEO of Kennis Music record label who offered him a record deal in 2010. After getting signed in by Kennis Music, he released his debut single "I No Mind", which later got nominated for the Best R'n'b Video at the NMVA 2011 awards.
Joe El achieved more fame and popularity with the release of his award-winning track "Bakololo" which was a soundtrack used by Nigerian most famous radio stations between 2011 and 2012.[2] He also dropped hits such as: Love song and Happy and later on performed on big stages such as the Glo Rock n Roll show in four different states in Nigeria, the annual Kennis Music Easter Fiesta, and Star Quest Grand Finale.[2]
Joe El is often referred to as 2Baba's clone, due to their great facial resemblance.[9] In 2014, he personally expressed his admiration for the music legend and also how much he would like to collaborate with him[10] and testified that TuFace helped him overcome criticism[11]. In August 2016, he revealed how the striking resemblance with the legend made him weep bitterly.[12]
In 2014, Joe El released the video of a song titled "Hold On" featuring 2Face Idibia. The video was directed by Clarence Peters and produced by Grammy Award winning Hakim Abdulsamad.[13] The video later got nominated for The Headies award for best collaboration in 2015.[14]
In 2014, his song, "Oya Now" in which he featured Oritsefemi got another nomination for The Headies Best Collaboration Video award[15].
He again got two nominations in the NMVA 2014 edition, one for his song, "You Are In Love" which was nominated for Best R'n'b Video category which was won by Niyola and the other for his new video "Oya Now" nominated for Best Video by A New Act which he won.[16][17] These nominations helped push him further to the lamplight.[18]
In 2017, he narrated to Hip TV that the reason why Nigerian artistes turn down offers to perform live on stage is because of the poor pay.[19]
In 2019, he teamed up with Ace Music Producer Masterkraft to produce a dance song titled "Rawa" (Dance).
