Joseph Gaydos Jr. (born April 18, 1991) is an American musician. He is best known for playing Zack Mooneyham in the 2003 film School of Rock.
Early life
Gaydos was born in Dearborn, Michigan[1] to Joey Gaydos Sr., who was also a musician and played guitar in the Detroit rock scene, including MC5, The Stooges, The Rockets and Brownsville Station.[2] He started playing guitar at age three[3] and was gifted his first guitar when he was nine years old.[2]
Career
Gaydos was at a music camp in Ann Arbor when his parents received an email asking to audition for the film School of Rock, which he passed and cast as Zach Mooneyham and moved to New York to shoot the film.[1] After the film was released, Gaydos was offered several other film roles, but turned them down as he only wanted to focus on music.[2] He formed The Joey Gaydos Group in 2005, who released an album in 2006 and later played in the band Stereo Jane.[2] Joey has played guitar on tracks for artists such as Paradime, Uncle Kracker and Keri Lynn Roche and now plays in the band Never Sorry.[4]
Personal life
As of 2016, Gaydos was living in Canton, Michigan, and teaching guitar to children at the Ann Arbor Music Center but by 2019 was living in Punta Gorda, Florida.[2]
Gaydos was arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence and for underage drinking.[5]
On February 25, 2019,[6] Gaydos was arrested by Florida police on two counts of grand theft and one count of shoplifting for stealing guitars and an amp over the course of five weeks in places such as Sarasota, Venice, and North Port and selling them to pawn shops for money.[3][6][7] Gaydos reportedly blamed his drug addiction on the thefts.[3]
