John Alexander Bolton (born 23 December 1972) also known as "JB" is a New Zealand entrepreneur, media commentator and the founder of Squirrel,[1], a mortgage broker business and peer-to-peer lending and investing platform. Squirrel is one of New Zealand’s largest mortgage adviser firms, which writes close to $1 billion of mortgages per year. In 2017, Bolton was appointed as a board member of Financial Advice NZ, the industry body for financial advisers. [2] Bolton is regularly in the media as a commentator on the NZ housing market and mortgage rates.[3] In 2019 he will be on television as the mortgage expert in Dream Home Dilemma which is to play on Prime TV and Sky.[4]

Early life[edit]

Bolton was born in Johnsonville, Wellington and educated at St Patrick's College and the Victoria University of Wellington. He has a Bachelor of Commerce from Victoria University and also studied towards and MSc in Finance at the University of London.

Early career[edit]

He began work for Westpac bank in its Treasury in In 1996, Bolton began work for Westpac Bank in its Treasury. He worked at Westpac in various senior finance, strategy and marketing roles until 2007 when he moved to ANZ bank to head up its where he managed the products division as part of its acquisition/merger with National Bank of New Zealand.

Squirrel[edit]

On the 29th of January 2008, after leaving ANZ Bank, Bolton founded Squirrel Mortgages, an advice based brokerage aimed primarily at helping young New Zealanders get into the Auckland property market. Following success and growth in the industry, in November 2015 Bolton launched Squirrel Mortgages’ sister company Squirrel Money. [5] Squirrel Money became New Zealand’s second peer-to-peer lending platform and the only platform with a reserve fund concept to protect investors and a secondary market to provide liquidity to investors and sell their investments.

In 2009 Squirrel won its first industry award – No.1 NZ Mortgage Business and John Bolton as No.1 Adviser from the Allied Mortgage Brokers. [6] Allied later became NZ Financial Services Group [7], the preeminent mortgage aggregator in New Zealand.[8] [9]. Squirrel has won the top New Zealand Mortgage Business award for NZFSG or its earlier incarnations every year between 2009 and 2018.
