John Ham is the founder CEO and Chairman of the live video streaming service Ustream. Business Insider selected John Ham as one of 'The Silicon Valley 100' in 2010.[1] In 2016, he sold Ustream to IBM for $130 Million.[2]
Biography[edit]
Education[edit]
Ham attended United States Military Academy where he interned with NASA and New York Stock Exchange and went on to receive his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. Ham has also been invited to lecture at Harvard Business School and Stanford Graduate School of Business.
After West Point[edit]
Ham was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. While in the Army, Ham was selected as a Commander and later nominated to be the Aide to The 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command Commanding General in South Korea.
Ustream[edit]
In 2006, John Ham founded Ustream along with cofounders Brad Hunstable and Gyula Feher. At the time, soldiers were limited by the phone or instant messenger to connect with family and friends back home. Ustream wanted a way for their friends in the Army to be able to communicate with their families and to talk to all of their relatives at once when free time in the war zone was limited.[3]
Ustream started open beta service in March 2007, and was one of the first live video streaming sites. In the same year, it was selected as the Editor's Choice in PC Magazine.[4] Ustream gained widespread adoption as politicians such as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton used it to stream political events.[5]
In 2011, Ustream was marked in the Guinness World Records for "Most content ingested by an online video service", which was close to double that of YouTube at the time.[6]
In Jan 2016, Ustream was sold to IBM for $130 Million.[7]
