Jonah Ansell (born 1981 in Chicago, IL) is an American filmmaker, writer, musician and marketer. MTV has called his work “darkly beautiful”[1] and NPR has called it “lushly constructed and visually mesmerizing.”[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Ansell was born in Chicago, IL. He attended Amherst College in Amherst, MA where he played NCAA baseball. He earned an MFA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.[3] He lives in Santa Monica, CA. His father is author Dr. David A. Ansell. He is a descendant of Nobel Prize winner I.I. Rabi.

Writing and filmmaking[edit]

Ansell founded, raised seed capital and launched the humor magazine Rivalfish, sold to National Lampoon in 2007 for five times the initial investment.[4] The firm’s original TV Pilot “The Fish Fry” was nominated for a Chicago Innovation Award by the Chicago Sun-Times[5], featured in Entrepreneur[6] Startup Nation[7] and Deadspin[8], with original creative content regularly featured in Sports Illustrated[9] Deadspin[10][11] and ADWEEK.[12][13] Ansell's entrepreneurial experience founding Rivalfish is featured as a case study in the book How'd You Score That Gig?[14][15]: A Guide to the Coolest Jobs-and How to Get Them?[16]

Ansell wrote, directed and produced the Academy-Award qualifying 2012 short film Cadaver[17][18][19][20][21], starring Christopher Lloyd, Tavi Gevinson and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates, and featuring the music of Neil Young[22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30][31] and the Pet Shop Boys,[32] the film was released in partnership with the Standard Hotel in New York.[33] The New York Times called the unveiling “A must-attend event of New York Fashion Week.”[34][35] The film aired on PBS in the U.S., earned a distribution deal in Japan, and was named Best Animation Film at the 2012 Hollywood Film Awards.[36] Gevinson called Cadaver “the least sappy but most tender love story I’ve encountered.”[37]

Ansell wrote, directed and produced the 2018 film Moose, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kathy Bates, unveiling it at the 2018 AT&T Film Awards at Warner Bros. Studios[38] in Burbank, CA[39], where Ansell earned the top prize “Best Emerging Filmmaker.[40][41]

In partnership with Wendy’s, Ansell wrote and produced the award winning 2008 film First Bass, filmed on site at Wrigley Field, starring Tavi Gevinson, Strangers With Candy's Greg Hollimon, and American Movie’s Mark Borchardt. The film aired on PBS and was executive produced by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss.[42]

Ansell is author of the 2013 book Cadaver[43][44][45][46], published by Academy Chicago Publishers[47], unveiled at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.[48][49][50][51][52][53]

Ansell’s article She-Ra Made Me A Man was featured in the inaugural edition of the feminist magazine Filmme Fatales.[54]

Music producing and music videos[edit]

With permission from Grammy winner Neil Young, Ansell produced an acoustic 40th anniversary recording of Young’s only Billboard #1 hit, Heart of Gold, performed by Tavi Gevinson.[55][56][57][58][59] The song was released on the soundtrack to the film Cadaver. With permission from the Pet Shop Boys, Ansell produced an acoustic rendition of their 1988 Billboard #1 UK single Heart, performed by Tavi Gevinson and unveiled alongside the release of the book Cadaver.[60][61][62][63][64]

Alongside music producer Sam Barsh and rapper Mic Holden, Ansell co-wrote and produced the "Trump-era protest anthem" Moose, featuring the vocals of Holden, Samuel L. Jackson and Maiya Sykes:[65][66] Ansell produced and starred in the viral stop-motion music video Jump With Us, featuring the song Take Me With You by pop artist Palter Ego.[67]

Marketing and entrepreneurship[edit]

Ansell conceived of and designed @HyattConcierge[68], a 24/7 customer service tool for Hyatt Hotels, serving customers atover 700 properties in 50 countrie. The service was featured on the front page of USA Today upon launch.[69][70][71][72] The service was named a finalist for a Shorty Award[73], won Travel + Leisure's 2014 Smitty Award[74][75][76][77][78] and a 2015 Skifty award.[79]

Ansell conceived of and designed The Recommendation Index,[80][81][82][83][84][85][86] a social media measurement metric that evolved Net Promoter Score. It was featured in the New York Times upon launch and was named the SABRE Awards 2011 product of the year.[87][88]

Ansell was featured in PRWeek and called a “marketing genius” by the Chicago Tribune for devising the tongue-in-cheek March Madness promotion “A Babe, A Dog, and A Dick," which pitted sportscaster Dick Vitale, a young woman who knew nothing about sports, and a rescue dog against each other in a highly-publicized contest.[89][90][91]

Ansell developed a Southern California health education program highlighted on ABC, CBS and NPR to inspire teens to make better health decisions. He created the quiz What’s Your HighQ?[92] to teach parents and teens about the harm drugs and alcohol can inflict on adolescents.[93]

Ansell served as marketing and creative lead on the development of a wearable technology called Speak, a 360-degree pet-care “management system. The app won grand prize at the 2014 Veterinary Innovation Challenge, sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).[94][95]

Public speaking[edit]

Ansell has been invited to speak at Pixar, Comic-Con[96][97][98][99][100] and at graduate schools, universities and high schools across the country.[101] He has served as a celebrity judge for Gilda’s Club annual teen essay contest.[102]
