Jonathan Pierre Galland (born April 19, 1991).[1] is a French composer established in San Francisco, California, United States.[2][3]

Early life[edit]

Fascinated by Classical music, Galland started violin lessons at an early age[4][5] and quickly developed an appreciation for film music. By age 13, Galland had decided to pursue a career as a film composer[4].

Education[edit]

Galland studied the violin and music theory at various local Conservatoires until High School, where he got accepted in the music section of the Lycée Jean Pierre Vernant.[6] While in High School, Galland toured as live technician for French singer-songwriter Pierre Lachat, and interned at Radio France as an editing assistant, as well as the Salle Pleyel as production assistant for orchestra and stage management[6].

After graduating in 2010 with a "Music Technician Certificate", Galland shortly attended the École Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle in Paris, but deeming the school too technical, moved to the United States a year later to attend the Academy of Art University in San Francisco[7]. While still in college, Galland's composer reel already included actors Tom Cruise and Chris Evans[8]. In 2019, Galland graduated from the Academy of Art University with a Master of Fine Arts in music production and sound design for visual media[9].

Career[edit]

Upon moving to San Francisco, Galland began receiving music commissions for film and theater[10]. In the following years, he had written original music for animated shorts[11][12], feature films[13][14], advertising[15], Public Service Announcement[16], and figure skating shows featuring Olympians, National champions, and performers from such companies as Disney on Ice, Stars on Ice, Holiday on Ice, Broadway on Ice, Ice Capades, and Cirque du Soleil[17][18][19]. Galland has also created music for three-time Olympic figure skater and four-time World champion Kurt Browning[20][21][22].

Galland is also a member of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences[23]. He has served as a music judge at the Juno Awards[24][25], and World Soundtrack Awards[26]. In 2022, under the Presidency of Joe Biden, Galland was granted permanent residency through the Alien of extraordinary ability Green Card (commonly known as the "Einstein visa") under the EB-1 visa program.

Musical style[edit]

Being a classically trained musician, Galland's compositions and scores are predominantly orchestral, drawing from post-romanticism and minimalism, but also electronic music. His musical style gravitates around composers Thomas Newman, Philip Glass and Joe Hisaishi.[citation needed] Child vocals are often heard in Galland's music, and are also part of his musical signature[27][28][29][30]. Since 2019, Galland has been collaborating with young studio vocalist Danica Lipetsky[31][4][32]. Galland occasionally writes Jazz-influenced scores, ranging from Orchestral jazz[33], to Big band[34] and Gypsy jazz[35].

Accolades[edit]

Galland has received international music and film festival awards for his work as a composer[36]. Accolades include "Soundtrack of the Year", "Best Song of the Year", "Best Composer", "Best Original Music", "Best Film Score", "Best Trailer Arrangement", among others. Issuers include the Global Music Awards[37][38][39], the Garden State Film Festival[40], the Virgin Spring Cinefest[41][42], the Festival du Film de Paris, the Wales International Film Festival[43], the Calcutta International Cult Films Festival[44], and the Cult Critic Movie Awards among others.

Galland is a three-time Crystal Pine Award nominee from the "International Sound & Film Music Festival" in Croatia. Fellow nominees include John Williams, John Powell, Ludwig Göransson, Gary Rydstrom, Nicholas Britell, Tyler Bates, Thomas Newman, Alberto Iglesias, Gabriel Yared, Max Richter, Hildur Guðnadóttir, Alexandre Desplat and James Newton Howard[45][46][47][48].
