Onwe Joseph Onwe (died November 2024) was a Nigerian politician and party administrator. He served as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Ebonyi State, where he played a significant role in grassroots mobilization and party administration.[1] He was also a member of Ebonyi state council of Elders.
Early life and education
He hails from Amata village in Ntezi town, Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi state. He was the eldest child of his parents, born into the family Onwe. His late mother was a princess from the Ozuma royal family in Ntezi. Being raised during the civil war, he shortly became a carpenter after the war, a profession he was known for until his career in politics.
Political career
Onwe held various leadership and political roles within Ebonyi state, and later joined PDP. As State Chairman, he coordinated the party’s structures and worked to strengthen its presence during election cycles.[1] He was widely regarded as a bridge-builder in Ebonyi politics, maintaining relationships across different party blocs and contributing to peacebuilding efforts during intra-party contestations.[2]
Death
Onwe Joseph died in November 2024 after a brief illness.[1] His death prompted tributes from political leaders, including Francis Nwifuru, Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, Uche Secondus, and PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Iliya Damagum.[2]
Legacy
Onwe is remembered as one of the grassroots mobilizers in Ebonyi politics. His tenure as PDP chairman was marked by efforts to strengthen internal democracy and maintain unity within the party.[1] He is also remembered as a pioneer of Orring identity in Ebonyi, taken the Korring term “Lekan Orin Ogaga” (Ohamadike).
