Sulpicio Nesia Yu Jr. (born January 15, 1959), widely known as Doc Junie Yu,[1] is a Filipino physician and politician from Calape, Bohol.[2] A prominent figure in Calape politics for decades, Yu previously served as Mayor from 2007 to 2016.[3][4][5] He subsequently served as Vice Mayor for three consecutive terms since June 30, 2016, winning the elections in 2016, 2019, and 2022.[6][7][8]
Early life and education
Sulpicio Nesia Yu Jr. was born on January 15, 1959, in Calape, Bohol. He is the son of Sulpicio "Pisiong" Yu and Bienvenida "Beding" Nesia. [9]:754 He attended Bohol Province Institute, where he was the class president of the Class of 1975.[10] He then pursued his medical degree at the Cebu Institute of Medicine, graduating with the Class of 1983.[11] He became a licensed physician specializing in Family Medicine.[12]
Yu's family has a history in local politics. His father is Sulpicio T. Yu, a former vice-mayor of Calape (1980–1986).[citation needed] His uncles include Gerardo T. Yu, a former mayor of Calape (1992–1995);[13] Gerardo's son, Jesus Yves Bustamante Yu, served as Vice Mayor of Calape (2004–2007).[14][15] Another uncle, Vicente Tan Yu, served as a municipal councilor of Calape (2004–2013).[14][3][4] His brother, Nelson N. Yu, also served as mayor of the same municipality (2016–2022).[6][7]
Medical career
Before entering politics, Yu practiced medicine. He was Municipal Health Officer of Calape from circa 1991 to 2007.[16][17][18] His specialization is in Family Medicine.[12]
Political career
Known publicly as "Doc Junie Yu,"[citation needed] Yu's political career in Calape spans almost two decades. He has been associated with Lakas-Kampi CMD, the Liberal Party, and, as confirmed by his 2025 Certificate of Candidacy and 2022 election run, the National Unity Party (NUP).[6][7][8][2]
First mayoral tenure (2007–2016)
Yu served as Mayor for three consecutive terms, from June 30, 2007, to June 30, 2016.[3][4][5] He came into office succeeding Ernesto C. Herrera II.[14]
- In the 2010 local elections, running under Lakas-Kampi, he was re-elected with 12,496 votes (81.40%). His brother, Nelson N. Yu, was his running mate and won as Vice Mayor.
- For the 2013 local elections, he switched to the Liberal Party and was again re-elected as Mayor with 5,239 votes (61.53%). Nelson N. Yu also won re-election as Vice Mayor.
He was succeeded as Mayor by his brother, Nelson N. Yu, at the end of this tenure in 2016.[6]
Vice Mayor (2016–2025)
Following his terms as mayor, Yu served as Vice Mayor of Calape from June 30, 2016, to June 30, 2025, winning elections in 2016 (LP),[6] 2019 (LP),[7] and 2022 (NUP).[8] His predecessor as Vice Mayor was his brother, Nelson N. Yu.[6]
- In the 2016 elections, he ran for Vice Mayor under the Liberal Party and won with 12,792 votes.[6] He served alongside his brother who was elected Mayor.[19]
- He was re-elected as Vice Mayor in the 2019 elections, under the Liberal Party, garnering 14,369 votes (89.47%).
- In the 2022 elections, running under the National Unity Party (NUP), he secured another term as Vice Mayor with 11,960 votes.[8] During this term, he served with Mayor Julius Caesar Herrera (NPC), who unseated his brother, Nelson Yu (NUP), as mayor. In August 2024, The Bohol Tribune reported that the Office of the Ombudsman for the Visayas dismissed corruption charges against Yu Jr., which had been filed by Mayor Herrera related to alleged usurpation of authority in signing contracts of service. The Ombudsman found Yu Jr. acted within his authority as Presiding Officer of the Sangguniang Bayan.[20]
Second mayoral tenure (2025–present)
Yu was elected again as mayor of Calape in the May 2025 local elections as a candidate of the NUP. He received 11,688 votes (54.59%).[21]
