Justine Kolata (born January 6, 1990) is an American philosopher, cultural entrepreneur, and salonnière.

Education[edit]

In 2012, Kolata received her BA with distinction in philosophy and political science from Yale University. In 2013 she received her M.Phil. with distinction from The University of Cambridge. She is currently pursuing a PhD in the German Department at The University of Cambridge[1] under the supervision of Dr. Martin Ruehl. The subject of her dissertation is on Enlightenment salon culture and conceptions of Bildung, self-cultivation, and Die schöne Seele, the beautiful soul, in German Philosophy.

Career[edit]

As an undergraduate, Kolata founded the first Human Rights in Academia conference and academic committee at Yale University.

In 2014, Kolata founded The Public Sphere, a nonprofit cultural organization that revives the Enlightenment tradition of salon culture. She organized the first philosophy salon festival at the Schloss Wartin in Brandenburg Germany in summer 2015[2] before moving The Public Sphere headquarters to London in Autumn 2015. She currently directs the organization's activities and expansion efforts and oversees its international festivals[3] in locations such as Maloja Palace near St. Moritz Switzerland, and its international salons in countries including: England, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and The United States. Kolata has also developed salon formats for other organizations such as The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce[4] and The Institute of Art and Ideas.[5]

In 2017, Kolata founded The Public Sphere Institute a philosophy consultancy which offers tuition in the philosophy and pedagogy of Bildung and organizes salon events for companies and organizations. She directs its activities from its London headquarters in Westminster.

Kolata is a regular contributor on topics such as salon culture, virtue ethics, and self-cultivation, to publications including Aeon[6]The European[7] Save Liberal Democracy[8] and Global Policy.[9]

Personal life[edit]

Born in Chicago, Justine Kolata is the daughter of Anna Kolata and Alan Kolata, Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology at The University of Chicago. Kolata grew up in the United States, Bolivia, Italy, France, and Cambodia. She currently lives in London. She is a black belt in Karate.
