Justo Armas (died in San Salvador on 29 May 1936) was a merchant of possible Austrian origin who lived in El Salvador. His refined lifestyle, along with his eccentricities and apostasy, gave rise to a legend linked to the Emperor of Mexico Fernando Maximilian José of Austria

Stay in El Salvador[edit]

The earliest known certainty of Armas's stay in El Salvador dates back to 1871, when he participated in a donation of money for the patron saint festivities of San Salvador. During his first years in the country, he was welcomed by the wealthy families of the time, including Vice President Gregorio Arbizú.

Armas was appreciated for being a cultured person, despite having arrived in the country barefoot, a particularity for which he would always be remembered. As is known, the walking in this way was – according to his words - to fulfill a promise to the Virgin of Carmen for having helped him get out of a moment of danger of death. He also promised never to reveal his true identity.

Over the years he ran a rental business. According to Pachita Tennant Mejía de Pike, who met him when she was still a child in San Salvador, he also had a business catering parties or catering called "La dinnerware". It is said that he was a person close to the Austrian imperial family. He also taught classes in "social graces" and protocol, recently arrived in San Salvador. His manners were extremely aristocratic, as was his way of speaking German.

When he died, his great friend and confessor, Monsignor Belloso, Archbishop of San Salvador, expressed: "A saint and a great personage has died!». The last years, he lived in the house of the Arbizú family, who were his heirs.

His origin remains an enigma, a real unknown and much has been written about the topic. Rolando Ernesto Deneke, who has been a scholar in Justo's life and has been to Austria several times to research about his life and collect data, said that he has no doubt that Justo was someone very important in the Austrian imperial family, something of which he gave proof in his lectures. Despite the fact that his origin was unknown, in the death certificate of Don Justo Armas, it is mentioned that he was originally from Austria.
