Kamla Nath Sharma (Also K.N.Sharma, Hindi: कमलानाथ शर्मा, born March 1946) is an Indian water resources and hydropower engineer, Hindi litterateur and researcher of Vedic exposition on environmental and water sciences. His fields of work include Hydrology, Irrigation & Drainage and Hydropower Engineering. He has also published research papers on water science, environment, and ecology referenced in the ancient Indian scriptures like Vedas and Upanishads. He has also authored books of literary satires and short stories in Hindi language. He has published articles, satires and stories in various magazines of India and abroad in Hindi literature, during last about five decades.

Early Life[edit]

Born in Jaipur, Rajasthan (India) in a family of Sanskrit scholars, he graduated in Civil Engineering from MBM Engineering College (Now MBM University), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and obtained Master of Engineering degree in Hydraulic Structures from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani.

Service to the Profession[edit]

K.N.Sharma taught water power engineering and civil engineering subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (then Malaviya Regional Engineering College) at Jaipur, Rajasthan from 1969 to 1981 as Assistant Professor. During this tenure, he was awarded Ford Foundation Fellowship in Water Management at the University of California, Davis (USA) in 1976-77.[1]

Later, he was involved with hydrologic design of several Indian hydel projects like Chamera (Stage I), Dhaleshwari, Dhauliganga, Salal, Goriganga to name a few, between 1981-1989 as Head of the Hydrology and Water Resources Unit at the Government of India enterprise National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd. (NHPC Limited) at its headquarters in New Delhi (now in Faridabad, Haryana), India.

During his tenure with International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), New Delhi, India between 1989-2010, Sharma was associated with several Dialogues involving FAO, UNESCO, IUCN (France), Global Water Partnership, World Water Forums, IWMI (Sri Lanka), World Water Council, International Water Resources Association, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, Switzerland), World Agricultural Forum,[2] etc. and conferences of international water organizations. He also worked on International and National Technical Committees, such as those of ISO, viz., TC 30, TC 113, BIS (India) (BDC-46, River Valley Schemes), etc. He retired in 2010 as Secretary of ICID at its Head Office in New Delhi[1].

He evaluated international networking in irrigation and drainage under the World Bank/FAO supported International Program for Technology and Research in Irrigation and Drainage (IPTRID) at Oxford/Wallingford (UK), Montpellier (France) and Wageningen (Netherlands), March–May, 1993, with British Council Fellowship. He was awarded Citation Plaques for his work in Global Food Security at the World Congress on Irrigation held in Montreal (Canada) in 2002.[1] and for irrigation and drainage at Sacramento, California (USA) in 2007[3] and at New Delhi (India) in 2009.[4]

Work on Vedic Scriptures[edit]

K.N. Sharma has researched on subjects of current global interest like environmental degradation, ecology, water pollution etc. dealt with in the oldest Indian ancient scriptures like Vedas etc. Encyclopaedia like "Encyclopaedia of the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine in Non-Western Cultures" [6] have included his papers. He also lectured on these subjects at international conferences in many countries like France, China, Japan, Germany, India etc., World Water Forums, International Water Resources Association (IWRA, France), Rajasthan University (India), Aqua Foundation (India), etc.

Hindi Literature[edit]

With his first name Kamla Nath (Hindi: कमलानाथ), he has published articles, satires and stories in Hindi language in different magazines of India and abroad since 1960s. His recent published books include :
