Plot[edit]
The story starts with a description of the village of Muttupaadi, a setting Bolwar usually utilises for most of his stories. Set in 1986, the story narrates the plight of the protagonist, Kunhi Patumma and her family as they attempt to take advantage of the new governmental policy that promised 20 kg of rice per month to all poor families. After Adrama, her grandson, announces this good news, the family kickstarts their plan of dividing their small hut into three parts. They toil day and night to put up new walls with mats and wood from the nearby Kuntala Forest in hopes of tricking the Panchayat officers into considering them as three households and allotting them rations for each of them. Unfortunately, the family’s hopes are crushed when they realise that the five men who visit their hut are people from the Ullal Mosque who have arrived to collect contributions from each household for the construction of a new orphanage. Upon this realisation, Kunhi Patumma closes her eyes in despair as her hopes of striking gold were shattered by the reality which now required them to pay two more rupees as a donation from their “three” households.
