Memorial stone for Karl Härle

Karl Härle (* September 19 1872 in Aulendorf; † June 16 1962 in Koblenz) was a German farmer and largest shareholder of the Karthäuserhof in Koblenz.

Career[edit]

Karl Härle was born in 1872 as the son of the Economic Council and brewery owner Heinrich Härle († 1923 in Koblenz) and Elisabeth Eberle in Aulendorf in Württemberg. After completing an agricultural apprenticeship, he attended the Agricultural College in Weihenstephan in 1895 and was then manager of his parents' business until 1910. On April 1, 1912, together with his father and brother Eugen, he acquired the Karthäuserhof estate on the Karthause in Koblenz. From 1914 to 1918 he served as an officer in First World War.

Karl Härle expanded the previously dilapidated Karthäuserhof into an industrial model company. He ran a dairy farm, built a dairy with a daily capacity of 25,000 liters, an extensive orchard with around 18,000 bush fruit cultures, a vineyard with 26,000 vines and cultivated 55 hectares of arable land. At many exhibitions, the estate received valuable prizes for its milk and dairy products, the fine fruit and the vineyards. He employed around 80 people, for whom he had 48 company apartments built. By the early 1940s, the Karthäuserhof had become the largest supply company on the Middle Rhine.

The estate was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War on September 21, 1944 by an air raid. Karl Härle was still able to rebuild at the end of the 1940s. Since he himself had no descendants of his own and his brother's family had already sold their shares, he also sold his share in the farm in 1959 to the city of Koblenz, which had all the buildings torn down and built a large new development area on the site.

In recognition of his services, the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate appointed him Economist in 1952, in 1957 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit First Class and in 1958 the Rhineland-Nassau Chamber of Agriculture awarded him the Golden Chamber Plaque. Karl Härle died on June 16, 1962 in Koblenz and was buried in the family crypt on the Koblenz Main Cemetery. The main street of the new development area bears the name Karl-Härle-Straße, and a memorial stone was erected for him on the spot where his manor used to be.
