Having a cart load of sugar cane one trader went through this place. As he was tired he parked his cart near the temple tank. While a boy asked for a sugarcane he refused, telling him that it was not sugarcane but something like grass stick. The boy said that the trader was lying and said that would become grass sticks and disappeared. Later the trader reached the mill for crushing the sugarcane. The man in charge of the mill said that grass sticks would not be crushed. The trader realised his folly and came to know that the boy was but Vinayaka. Then Vinayaka pardoned him and changed the grass sticks into sugarcanes. Then Vinayaka came to be known as Karumbayiram Pillayar[1]
