Manimoortheeswaram Uchishta Ganapathy Temple is an Uchchhishta Ganapati temple situated in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, in India.[1][2][3] This temple was constructed 900 years ago.[4] It is considered as the Asia's biggest Uchishta Ganapathi temple.[5][6] This temple is recognised as 'Arulmigu Moorthivinayagar Temple, Manimoortheeswaram'[7] by and under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, Government of Tamil Nadu.

'Uchishta Ganapathy' is one of the 32 forms of Ganapathy (Vinayaga/Ganesha). Also, all the 32 forms of Ganapathy are enshrined here in this temple.[8] The main deity Uchishta Ganapathy poses with 4 hands, keeping deity goddess Neelavani (Neelasaraswathi) on his left lap. He graces in the Sanctum Sanctorum with his trunk on the naval of deity goddess,[9] symbolizing the divinity of 'pregnancy'. Rishi theertham (of Thamirabarani river) and one more theertham named Ruthrapath are the divine tanks available here. Vanni tree and Palmyrah tree are the virukshas found here in this temple.

At an estimated cost of ₹65 lakh, renovation of this temple which is under the control of Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, are carried out by a committee headed by Swami Sankarananda.

Special features[edit]

The Giant Tower (Rajagopuram) of this temple is built with 5 tiers (stages). Next to the giant tower is erected the flagstaff of this temple. There are 3 prakarams and the main huge prakaram (maha mandap) is devoid of any shrine/idol. The prakaram which just surrounds the main deity is filled with shrines of 16 different forms of Vinayaga. In the year 2016, Kumbabhishek was performed and a lot of devotees attended it and got benefitted.

Shri Nellaiappar, Shri Gandhimathi Amman, Shri Subramaniyar with Shri Valli and Shri Deivanai, Shri Dakshinamurthy, Shri Chandikeswarar, Shri Swarna Akarshana Bhairavar, Saint Patanjali, Saint Vyagrabathar are the other deities associated with the main deity.

This temple is located on New bye-pass road and near the banks of Thamirabarani river, in the village viz., Manimoortheeswaram in Tirunelveli - 627001, in Tirunelveli district, in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. Its geographical coordinates are: 8.743098°N, 77.719160°E (8°44'35.2"N, 77°43'09.0"E). It is situated at about 58 m above the mean sea level. It is 3.5 km away from Tirunelveli town bus stand and 4 km away from Tirunelveli Junction railway station.

Temple timings[edit]

The temple is kept open from 07.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. (in the mornings) and from 05.00 p.m. to 08.00 p.m. (in the evenings). Two poojas are performed daily. They are: Sayaraksha pooja and Kalasandhi pooja.

Festivals[edit]

Vinayagar Chadhurthi in the Tamil month of Avani, every year is celebrated in a grand manner, for 10 days. This temple was constructed in such a manner that every year, on the first day of the Tamil month Chitrai, viz., Tamil New Year Day, the Sun rays directly fall on the Main Deity (Moolavar) Uchishta Ganapathy. It is also celebrated by a lot of visitor devotees on this special occasion. On Sankatahara Chadhurthi, every month, devotees offer flowers and other pooja items to perform pooja.
