Kate Walz (born 1996) is an American fashion designer originally from Nebraska, now based in New York City.[4] She designs high-end formal and occasion wear, known for combining vintage silhouettes with modern materials (sheer fabrics, beading, bows, feathers). She gained international attention in 2014 as the only American designer invited to the J Autumn Fashion Show held on the Eiffel Tower. [5]

Early life and education

Walz was born and raised in Bennington, Nebraska.[6] She began sewing at age 8 through 4-H competitions, winning a Grand Champion title. [7] By age 12 she was making her own patterns and selling designs out of Bellwether Boutique in Omaha. [8]

Walz attended Millard North High School in Omaha.[9] After high school she studied at Parsons School of Design in New York. [10]

Career

Walz launched her namesake brand in 2004.[11]

At age 13, she became the youngest designer to show at Omaha Fashion Week.[12]

At 16, she presented a collection at New York Fashion Week.[13]

In October 2014, she was one of eight designers—and the only American—invited to the J Autumn Fashion Show on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.[14]

In more recent years, she operates out of New York City, with her business divided into two lines: **Studio**, which produces unique one-of-a-kind garments made in-house; and **Main Line**, produced in small quantities at a local NYC factory.[15] Her 2024 collection (FW24) was featured in a pop-up at Blue in Green Soho. [16]

Brand and design style

Walz’s aesthetic is vintage-inspired formalwear with modern touches: sheer fabrics, hand beading, bows, feathers, classic silhouettes updated with unexpected details.[17]

Her creative inspiration comes from architecture, nature, 1960s music and design. She often explores themes of transparency and “in-between” moments or spaces in her recent collections.[18]

Major shows & exhibitions

  • Omaha Fashion Week (from age 13 onward)[19]
  • Kansas City Fashion Week[20]
