Katende Muhammad (born in 1988) is a well-known photographer based in Kampala, Uganda. Born and raised in Kampala to Hajji Sulaiman Katende, a resident of South Africa, and Princess Nakiyimba Hadija, a royal in the Buganda Kingdom. He is the C.E.O of Katende Muhammad Photography based in Kampala, Uganda.
Early Life and Education
Katende Muhammad, also known as Ssemakula, was born in 1988 on June 6th in Mulago Hospital to Hajji Sulaiman Katende and Princess Nakiyimba Hadija in Kampala. He attended All Saints Preparatory School in Bulenga, where he sat his Primary Leaving Exams in 2002. From there, he proceeded to Kololo High School for O' Level and A'Level, completing in 2008. While at Kololo High School, he was an amateur boxer and represented Kololo High School alongside Sharif Bogere (currently under Mayweather Promotions) in amateur boxing competitions around the city in 2004.
His boxing career did not materialize as he chose academics over sports while studying a science course at A' Level.
After A' Level, he proceeded to Makerere University to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, which he completed in 2011, graduating as a chemistry and biology teacher. Upon his graduation, he taught at City Side College Makerere, Pimbus Secondary School, and Zana Mixed Secondary School before leaving teaching for a career in photography, a profession he had always admired since childhood.
Career
He was introduced to photography by his grandfather, Hajji Bruham Kawaase, who was a celebrated photographer in Kampala in the 1980s. However, after quitting teaching, he first teamed up with a friend to start Oasis Investment Group, which was a company to deal in real estate work. This venture did not succeed, so after two months he quit to concentrate on photography.
After leaving the investment group, he worked for Fidelity Advertising Company[1] as the head of marketing. The company allowed him to continue pursuing his passion for photography. He formed a company and named it Katende Muhammad Photography[2]. The company focused on wedding photography as well as editorial photography for magazines, namely Flair and Bride and Groom magazines[3], which are products of Vision group.
During the 2016 presidential elections, he was assigned the task of running the social media campaigns for the biggest opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), with his team in Fidelity Advertising Company.
In 2018, Katende Muhammad Photography partnered with NTV Uganda to produce a weekly wedding show called Kiss the Bride.. The wedding show features local weddings on NTV.
Personal Life
Katende Muhammad married Zamarad Twaha, an air hostess with Emirates Airlines, in 2016, with whom he has two children (twins), Tahir Katende and Tamirah Katende. Their marriage has, however, been subject to controversy, with media reports circulating that he married Zamarad for her money and that the two have since divorced[4], citing reasons of marital unfaithfulness, claims that Katende refutes.
