Kathrin Christians
Kathrin Christians (born 1984) is a German flautist.
Biography
Christians grew up in Neckarsteinach and Heidelberg. She studied flute at the Musikhochschule Mannheim during high school and received her diploma there. Further studies led her to the masterclass of the Musikhochschule München. She graduated with distinction at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart.
Colin Clarke of US Fanfare magazine reviewed Christians' debut recording: "A somewhat magical recording, this; the standard of every aspect is superlative, from design through to recording. ... None of the technical demands stretch the soloist, Kathrin Christians, in the slightest. ... But as fascinating explorations of the flute repertoire go, this release takes some beating."[1] In Luxemburg's main music magazine Pizzicato, the editor-in-chief states: "Kathrin Christians has not only designed a very attractive and demanding program for her debut CD, she also plays the music very well. Her tone colours are stunning, and the performances benefit from an excellent accompaniment by the Württembergisches Kammerorchester."[2]
At the age of 23, Christians became solo flautist of the Heidelberger Sinfoniker and the Mannheimer Mozartorchester, where she participated until 2011. Since then she gives chamber music concerts and performs as a soloist at festivals such as the MDR Musiksommer, Lucerne Festival, Palermo Classica and others around Europe, Asia and Africa.
Just before the release of her debut album, Christians suffered a stroke that paralyzed her on her right side. After four months, she was back on stage and has been performing since then with an eye patch.
Her social commitment includes her membership of Musicians for Human Rights,[3] as well as the interdisciplinary development of a therapy-accompanying music program at the Tagestumorzentrum für Chemotherapie at the University Hospital Mannheim. Furthermore, she appears since her stroke as an interviewee and motivator. TV portraits and interviews were broadcast on German TV ZDF,[4] RBB,[5] SWR among others.
