Keeney Manufacturing Company
The Keeney Manufacturing Company is a manufacturer of tubular brass and other plumbing-related products headquartered in Newington, Connecticut. Keeney Manufacturing, founded in 1923 [1] includes several subsidiaries within the plumbing industry, including Plumb Pak, Duracraft Plastics, Tubular Industries of Canada Ltd., Timeout by Keeney, FlushAll,[2] and Belanger Plumbing.[3]
History
The company was founded in 1923 in New Britain, Connecticut,[4] by Bertha Ann Macristy Hanna, who became the first woman to found a manufacturing business in Connecticut. Bertha assembled a team of family members, and using management experience gained from a previous employer, launched Keeney, which produced residential plumbing and heating fittings. Because of the gendered politics of the era, it was uncommon for a woman to lead a business. Therefore, Bertha, despite being the majority shareholder of Keeney Manufacturing Company, asked her brother-in-law William Keeney to be the company's figurehead. "B.A. Macristy" held the titles of Treasurer and Corporate Secretary, and ran her factory from behind the scenes. Bertha, known for her strong will and resilience, guided Keeney through the Great Depression and World War II. Keeney Manufacturing's success in the plumbing industry resulted from its quality, innovation, and customer service.
The Keeney Manufacturing Company moved its 13 employees to its current location in Newington, CT on April 1, 1925, and has grown exponentially since. Keeney is still family-owned, and the current President and C.E.O. is R. Stuart Holden, Jr., grandson of Bertha Macristy Hanna. In 2013, Keeney celebrated its 90th year in business.[5]
Products
Keeney Manufacturing's initial offerings consisted of a small number of products used in the plumbing and heating industry. Currently, over 5,000 products are offered across the brand's subsidiaries, and Keeney products can be found in many major home improvement centers.
Locations
The Keeney Manufacturing Company is headquartered in Newington, CT and currently has facilities in four U.S. states, as well as Canada and China. Its product lines can be found in retail and wholesale locations in the United States and Canada.[6]
Community Involvement
Keeney Manufacturing and its employees participate in several local community events, such as road cleanups.[7] Keeney also annually awards a scholarship to a senior female student enrolled in Marketing, Finance, Accounting, or Engineering who is pursuing a career in manufacturing, in honor of 50-year veteran employee Carole Lipka. Annually, The Keeney Manufacturing Company sponsors the Newington Library 5K Challenge. All proceeds from the 5K Challenge benefit the Lucy Robbins Welles Library. A monthly "dress-down day" allows employees to dress casually for a day in exchange for a donation to a different charity, which is then matched by the company.
Certifications
Keeney Manufacturing is a Tier 1 Certified C-TPAT (C-TPAT: Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) member.[8]
Domestic Initiatives
The Keeney Manufacturing Company offers products in compliance with the Buy American Act (BAA) and the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA).[9]
