Kenyatta Lee Frazier Jr.[1] (born April 11, 2000),[4] known professionally as Ken Carson (sometimes stylized as Ken Car$on), is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is known for his studio album X which peaked at number 115 on the Billboard 200.[5]

Career[edit]

2015-2019: Beginnings[edit]

Frazier initially signed to 808 Mafia in 2015 as a rapper after meeting record producer TM88,[6] and would begin releasing music on SoundCloud as early as 2017. After gaining popularity in the underground rap scene, he would be discovered by fellow Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti and sign to his label Opium in 2019.[7][8]

2020-present: Boy Barbie, "Teen X" and X[edit]

After signing to Opium in 2019, Frazier would release two extended plays in 2020, Boy Barbie and Teen X.[2] At the start of 2021, he would release a sequel EP called Teen X: Relapsed, before releasing his debut studio album Project X later that year.[9][10] He released his second studio album X on July 8, 2022.[11] It peaked at number 115 on the Billboard 200.[5] In February 2022, he appeared as a guest on the track "Gëek High" off American rapper Yeat's album, 2 Alivë.[12]

Musical style[edit]

Ken Carson's musical style on his studio album has been described as "[having] electronic production that is energetic in nature," with Ken having "focused" flows and being "intent on making his audience get up from their seats."[13] His style's similarity to the style used by his record executive Playboi Carti on Whole Lotta Red has been noted by Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork.[10]

Kenyatta L Frazier Jr. (born April 11th, 2000[1]), better known by his stage name Ken Car$on, is an American rapper and producer from Atlanta, Georgia.[2] In 2015, he met record producer TM88 and was signed to the label 808 Mafia. In 2019, he signed to Playboi Carti's label, Opium. He has production credits on the track "Beno!" from Playboi Carti's album, Whole Lotta Red, and had a feature on the song "Gëek high" off Yeat's album, 2 Alivë. He released his first album in 2021 titled Project X.

Music Career[edit]

In 2015, Carson met with producer TM88 and was soon signed to 808 Mafia. In 2020, he released two Extended Play (Extended Play) albums, Teen X and Boy Barbie. He found his initial success with the track Yale from Teen X. In 2021, Carson pieced together tracks he had neglected to include in his first two EPs, and combined them into Lost Files, and subsequently Lost Files 2. In July of 2021, his debut album Project X was released. In 2022, Carson announced the release of his latest album, X. Just before it's release, he announced that he would be changing his name from Ken Car$on, to Ken Carson (notably missing the dollar sign). Three songs on this album, MDMA, New, and Intro, would surpass Yale within the first week of release, signaling the greatest success Carson has seen to date.

In the album description on Apple Music, Carson claims that he had always been around a community of artists with a similar style to him. He told Zane Lowe, "I used to hang out with TM88 and Southside all the time, so you [didn't] know who was gon [sic] walk in the studio". He points to Future and Young Thug as his closest influences, although it is clear from his style that Playboi Carti's influence is the greatest in his style. Referring to Playboi Carti, Carson said "He tell me every day, 'Bro, I'm proud of you'".[3]
